Christian Martinek Signs NLI With Baseball

Apr 18, 2014

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State baseball head coach Pat Casey announced that Friday that Christian Martinek has signed a National Letter of Intent to join the program for the 2015 season.

Martinek is a two-way player from Jesuit High School in Beaverton, Ore. A 2014 All-Region selection, he stands at 6-foot-5 and is considered the No. 2 prospect in the Pacific Northwest by Baseball Northwest.

“We are excited to announce that Christian has signed an NLI,” Casey said. “We think he is a front-line guy who can come in here and make an impact, both on and off the field.”

Martinek, who was a first-team all-league selection in football, playing quarterback, in 2013, competed at the prestigious Area Code Games in Long Beach in August, as one of the nation’s top high school baseball players. He was one of eight future OSU signees to play at the tournament, with five, including Martinek, playing for the Royals club.

“Oregon State has been there for me,” Martinek said. “When I met the coaches and walked around the campus, I fell in love with Oregon State. It’s a very family-oriented program with a great atmosphere. That’s the type of program I wanted to be in and that’s what I found at Oregon State.”

He was also a first-team all-league baseball selection as a sophomore for Jesuit, and was named the Metro League Pitcher of the Year.

Martinek has worked in 23 innings in 2014, going 3-1 with a 0.91 earned run average. He has struck out 30 and held opponents to a .128 batting average. Offensively, he is 13-for-30 (.433) with three doubles, two triples and nine runs batted in.

In 2013, he went 3-0 on the mound, recording a 0.00 ERA in 18 innings, finishing with 27 strikeouts. Offensively, he batted .524 with three doubles, a home run and eight RBI.

In November, Martinek was named by Baseball America as the nation’s No. 78 high school prospect. Perfect Game has him rated as the top left-handed pitcher in the state of Oregon and 39th nationally.
