Asturias Garners Second Team All-American Honor

Apr 19, 2014

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – California senior captain Alicia Asturias posted a strong 39.150 in the all-around during the 2014 NCAA Women’s Gymnastics semifinals to claim second team All-American honors, the NCAA announced Saturday. She is Cal’s first gymnast since 1992 to earn All-America designation.

The top four all-arounders in each of the two semifinal sessions received first team All-American status, while the next four top scores were placed on the second team. Asturias finished 17th in the all-around after posting solid scores on all four events. She finished 56th on vault (9.80), 48th on bars (9.80), 40th on beam (9.80) and 77th on floor (9.75).

This is the sixth All-American award for Cal overall. Asturias is just the fourth gymnast in program history to claim All-American honors, joining: Kristen Smyth (first team vault, second team floor and all-around), Mimi Goyer (second team balance beam) and Cindy Tom (second team balance beam). All three gymnasts were members of Cal's 1992 squad, the only squad in program history to advance to the NCAA Championships as a team.

Asturias finishes her career as one of the most decorated gymnasts in program history. Along with her second team All-American award, she was named NACGC West Region Gymnast of the Year, an All-Pac-12 First Team all-arounder, AAI Award finalist, Pac-12 Scholar Athlete of the Year and Pac-12 All-Academic First Team selection. Asturias became Cal’s first gymnast since My-Lan Dodd in 2003 to claim Pac-12 Gymnast of the Week honors. She claimed 12 event titles with 27 top-three finishes and matched the program-record 9.95 on vault for the second time in her career. After setting new career-high scores on every event in 2013, she topped each score this season, including an incredible 39.425 all-around.
