Pac-12 announces softball players of the week
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - UCLA swept the Pac-12 softball honors this week, as junior catcher and designated player Stephany LaRosa was voted Pac-12 Softball Player of the Week and senior Jessica Hall was voted Pac-12 Softball Pitcher of the Week for play from April 14-20, the Conference office announced today.
LaRosa (Diamond Bar, Calif.) had hits and runs batted in through all four Bruin victories last week, going 6-of-11 (.545 average) with eight rBI, two home runs and four runs scored. LaRosa had a .600 on base percentage and a 1.273 slugging percentage, also posting two doubles and drawing two walks. In UCLA’s game against Cal State Northridge on Tuesday, LaRosa had an RBI single in three plate appearances. The junior was solid for the Bruins in the series against Oregon State, with two multi-hit games including Friday’s game where she hit two home runs in the same game for the seventh time in her career. She is currently second on the team with a .398 batting average, 11 home runs and 37 RBI. She is also first with a .828 slugging percentage, tied for second with a .525 on base percentage and third with 25 walks.
Hall (Chino Hills, Calif.) earned three of the Bruins’ four victories in the circle this week, striking out 21 batters in 15.0 total innings of work. Hall opened the week with an 11-strikeout performance against Cal State Northridge, tossing a five-inning, one-hit shutout. The 11 strikeouts were one shy of a career high and her third double-figure strikeout effort this season. On Saturday versus Oregon State, Hall fanned seven in six innings to pick up another win. She finished the weekend by pitching four innings of relief in the series finale to earn her third victory of the week, striking out three batters. She is now 14-2 on the season with a 1.67 earned run average and 119 strikeouts in 92 1/3 innings.
It is the fourth-career weekly honor for LaRoa, who earned it once in both 2012 and 2013 and also received the honor earlier this year on March 31. It marks Hall’s first-career weekly accolade. The awards mark UCLA’s 130th and 131st all-time weekly honors and the seventh and eighth for the Bruins in just this season alone.
The Bruins travel to Berkeley to face California in a three-game series that begins with the opener on Friday, April 25 at 3 p.m. PT. UCLA and Cal play again on Saturday, April 26 at 1 p.m. PT then on Sunday, April 27 at 12 p.m. PT. Sunday’s game will be broadcast live on Pac-12 Networks.
