Women’s Golf Set for Pac-12 Championships

TUCSON, Ariz. – No. 11 University of Arizona women’s golf (ranking by Golfstat.com) will begin the championships portion of the spring season with the Pac-12 Championships, hosted by Oregon State, this weekend. Held at Trysting Tee Golf Club in Corvallis, Ore, competition will take place Fri.-Sun., April 25-27. One round of play will be contested each day with 9 a.m. MST/PT tee times for Friday and Saturday and an 8:30 a.m. MST/PT start on Sunday. Trysting Tee Golf Club is a par 72, 6,256-yard club.

Arizona earned the No. 6 seed and is paired with No. 9 seed Colorado and No. 11 seed Washington State for the opening round on Friday. The Wildcats, Buffs and Cougars will tee at 9:40 a.m. MST/PT.

Juniors Manon Gidali and Kendall Prince, sophomore Lindsey Weaver and freshmen Jessica Vasilic and Wanasa Zhou will be competing for the Wildcats this weekend. By Golfweek.com, Weaver is ranked No. 15 and Zhou is No. 43. By golfstat.com, Weaver is ranked No. 23.

No. 11 Arizona, No. 6 Arizona State, No. 35 California, No. 47 Colorado, No. 30 Oregon, No. 69 Oregon State, No. 9 Stanford, No. 2 UCLA, No. 1 USC, No. 8 Washington and No. 79 Washington State will play in Corvallis this weekend. (Rankings according to Golfstat.com 4/23/14)

The Wildcats own seven Pac-12 Team Championships in program history, including the 2010 win in Eugene, Ore. Arizona has also claimed four Pac-10 Individual Championships, with the most recent coming from Lorena Ochoa in 2001. Last season, Arizona finished tied for fourth. UA has finished in top three at 16 conference championships since the 1987 season.

This weekend’s championship event means there is a point on the line in the Territorial Cup Series. Since the 2009-10 season, UA and ASU’s head-to-head match-ups took on an added bonus with the inception of the Territorial Cup Series. The Territorial Cup, once given to the winner of the annual UA-ASU football game, is now an across-the-board contest that includes all varsity sports. The team that finishes highest at this weekend’s Pac-12 Championships will secure one point for their school.

Last time out, the Wildcats earned a fifth-place finish at the Silverado Showdown. Arizona shot a team total of 886 (+22) with rounds of 294 (+6), 296 (+8) and 296 (+8) to round out the top five teams. Weaver finished the individual race with a combined score of 208 (-8) for a runner-up finish. Weaver was just one shot from the individual winner after firing rounds of 69 (-3), 67 (-5) and 72 (E).
