Brady, Van Nguyen Advance in Ojai Singles

Ojai, Calif. - The UCLA women's tennis team had two players advance to Friday's main draw, singles quarterfinals, as play began on Thursday at the 2014 Pac-12 Championships in Ojai, Calif.

Top-seed Jennifer Brady posted a pair of 6-1, 6-4 victories, downing Colorado's Julyette Steur and USC's Kaitlyn Christian in the first and second rounds, respectively. Awaiting Brady in Friday's quarterfinals is seventh-seeded Denis Starr of Cal. The two players will square off at Noon at the Ojai Valley Athletic Club.

Also in action in singles on Friday will be second-seeded Chanelle Van Nguyen, who also notched two straight-set singles wins. Van Nguyen opened up the tournament with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Stanford's Krista Hardebeck in the first round. She followed that up with a 6-3, 6-0 win against Washington's Elianne Douglas-Miron. Van Nguyen will meet sixth-seeded Zoe Scandalis of USC on Friday at Noon, also at the Ojai Valley Athletic Club.

Two Bruins who didn't fare as well on Thursday were eighth-seeded Kyle McPhillps and Courtney Dolehide. McPhillips suffered a 6-3, 7-5 loss to ASU's Desirae Krawczyk in the first round of the main draw, while Dolehide fell to USC's Giuliana Olmos, 6-4, 6-3 in the Pac-12 Invitational draw.
