Men’s Golf Travels to Arizona for Pac-12 Championship
The Bruins, winners of the Redhawk Invitational three weeks ago, are seeking their sixth overall conference title and first since 2006. In the last seven years since the Bruins captured the conference championship, they have recorded three runner-up finishes. Cal is the two-time defending Pac-12 champion entering this weekend’s tournament.
Head Coach Derek Freeman has announced the following lineup for the Pac-12 Championship: senior Anton Arboleda, juniors Matt Pinizzotto and Preston Valder, and sophomores Lorens Chan, Jonathan Garrick and Jake Knapp.
Garrick and Chan are the Bruins’ top-ranked players entering the championship. Garrick is ranked 36th nationally by GolfStat, and leads the team in scoring average at 70.9. In 30 rounds this season, he is nine-under par and has completed three of his last four starts under par. He also leads the team with 14 rounds under par and 11 rounds under 70. At last year’s Pac-12 Championship, he tied for fifth place.
Chan, ranked 65th, is second on the team with a scoring average of 71.3. In 30 rounds, he is just two-over par and last week tied for third place at the Purdue Boilermaker Invitational (211, -5). He has posted a dozen rounds under par and eight rounds under 70.
Valder is the only player in the lineup with an individual victory this season. In October, he won the CS San Marcos Fall Classic (205, -11) for his first collegiate win. His scoring average is 71.9 in five starts.
Arboleda will be competing in his fourth consecutive conference championship, and he boasts three Top 15 results. Last season he tied for third, leading the Bruins to a runner-up finish. In 27 rounds this season, he is averaging 72.7 with seven rounds under par, five under 70.
Knapp and Pinizzotto will be competing in their first Pac-12 Championship. In six starts, Knapp is averaging 72.7 with an impressive fourth place finish at Chambers Bay (207, -4). In eight starts, Pinizzotto is averaging 72.8 with seven rounds under par.
The Gallery Golf Club will play to a par of 72 over 7,349 yards. The Pac-12 Men’s Golf Championship is a 72-hole tournament over three days (Apr. 25-27) featuring six-count-five scoring. On Fri., Apr. 25, teams will play 36 holes from the 1st and 10th tees.
