Women’s Golf Finishes Ninth At Pac-12's
CORVALLIS, Ore. – A very successful Pac-12 Championship, which was hosted by Oregon State at Trysting Tree Golf Club, concluded on Sunday with the Beavers finishing in ninth place.
The wet conditions and howling winds kept Oregon State from repeating the spectacular round it shot on Saturday, as the Beavers carded a 14-over 302 at the par-72, 6,256-yard layout in the final round and finished in ninth place with a 34-over 300-296-302--898.
Stanford came back to win the team title by a stroke over Arizona in a dramatic finish and UCLA’s Alison Lee won medalist honors with a 5-under 211.
The Beavers will find out on Monday if they earn a berth to the NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championships, which would be their second trip in the past three years.
The 2014 NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championships selections will be announced live via the Golf Channel on Monday during Golf Central at 3 p.m. Additionally, the show will be streamed live on the Golf Channel website and posted afterwards on the NCAA website at www.ncaa.com.

“I think 34-over par, under the conditions, was a good score,” Oregon State head coach Risë Alexander said. “I think that we gave a few away at the end, but overall they played well. We are narrowing the gap between where we stand and the top. The main thing is that we are getting to be a better and better and better team and that’s just going to continue to happen because the kids are working hard and doing the right things. So it will work itself out.
“We will find out tomorrow if we advance to the NCAA Regionals. I feel like we are good enough to qualify and I feel like this is an NCAA Regional-caliber team. But it is out of our hands now.”
The faces of the program for the past four years, Lauren Sewell and Seshia Telles, led the Beavers in the final round with each posting a 3-over 75. The tandem has played in every tournament since they stepped on the Oregon State campus, and they accomplished outstanding careers even if the Beavers fall short of advancing to the NCAA Women’s Golf Championships.
Telles finished the Pac-12 Championship in a team-best tie for 21st place with a 7-over 76-72-75--223 and Sewell was a stroke back with an 8-over 73-76-75--224 for a tie for 25th.
Junior Anica Yoo and sophomore Chelsea Saelee, who will take over for Sewell and Telles as the veterans next season, had their moments in the conference championship. Yoo shot an even-par 72 in the second round and finished the tourney in a tie for 34th place with an 11-over 75-72-80--227. Saelee showed her consistency with a 4-over 76 in all three rounds that put her in a tie for 37th with a 12-over 228.
Sophomore Ashlee Pickerell improved each day as she opened with a 6-over 78 before closing with a pair of 76’s to finish in a tie for 44th place with a 14-over 230.
The three-day, 54-hole tournament was a success due to the hard work from the volunteers, the staff at Trysting Tree and several Oregon State Athletic Department employees.
“I want to thank all of the volunteers, because they had to stand out here in some pretty miserable weather for three days,” Alexander said. “We had 10- to 15-mile-per-hour winds and rain and hail, so to do that shows the support of the community and the support of our program. We just really appreciate all of their support. I want to also thank the fans who came out and watched. We had just a ton of people out here. In the past I haven’t seen as much support from them, like 10 or 11 years ago. So growing that fan base is really important, and we really appreciate that.”
The best action from all three days of the Pac-12 Championship will be packed into one hour at 10 a.m. PT on Sunday, May 11 on the Pac-12 Networks and online via Pac-12 Now.
