T&F’s Men Roll Past Arizona And NAU At Double Dual

TUCSON, Ariz.—The Arizona State track and field teams competed in the annual Double Dual with Arizona and Northern Arizona on Saturday at Arizona’s Roy P. Drachman Stadium.

The men’s team topped Arizona, 104.5-95.5, and defeated NAU, 126-63. On the women’s side, ASU defeated NAU, 116-66, before being edged by Arizona, 106.5-91.5.

The women’s 4x100m relay team of Asiah Gooden, Brianna Tate, Alycia Herring, and LaTroya Franklin won with a season-best time of 44.17, which now stands as the new No. 5 time in ASU program history. This is the first new entry into the ASU top-10 in this event since Gooden and Herring helped secure the No. 10 time in 2012.

ASU has now run seven of the top-10 women’s 4x100m relay times on Double Dual record, with this as the new No. 2 time.

Junior Bryan McBride set a personal best in the high jump at 2.23m (7-3.75) for second overall, which moves him from No. 7 in the ASU record book to No. 3.

The men’s 4x100m relay team of Devan Spann, Will Henry, Keith Cleveland, and Ryan Milus also set a season best time with the win at 39.65. The time sits at the No. 7 time in Double Dual record, and like the women, the ASU men have run seven of the top-10 times.

ASU capped the night with a sweep of the 4x400m relays, first with the women’s team of Sara McDonald, LaTroya Franklin, Sarah Geren, and Brianna Tate clocking in a 3:34.29. The men’s team of Keith Cleveland, Will Henry, Devan Spann, and Cody Moore topped Arizona with a time of 3:09.44.

Juniors Shelby Houlihan and Payton Schutte went 1-2 in the 1500m with times of 4:25.86 and 4:28.56, respectively, while redshirt sophomore Ryan Herson led the Sun Devils on the men’s side with a third-place finish at 3:46.77.

Houlihan also won the 800m run with a time of 2:08.48, while freshman Kala Stone took third at 2:12.02. Also for ASU, freshman Mia Townsend ran a personal best at 2:18.39.

Junior Jessika Byrd took second in the hammer throw, just short of her personal best with a mark of 60.64m (198-11). Redshirt freshman Ashley Weber took fifth at 51.98m (170-06), and sophomore Ginger Jarchow threw a personal best 51.50m (168-11), for sixth.

On the men’s side, redshirt junior Kyle Lillie took second at 55.63m (182-06), while redshirt freshman Kyle Long threw a personal best 53.83m (176-07) for third. Redshirt junior Ryan Leslie threw 52.37m (171-10) for fifth. Leslie also won the men’s javelin competition at 53.63m (175-11), while Cody Moore set a new personal best with a throw of 41.52m (136-03).

Lillie also took second in the shot put at 16.87m (55-4.25), while Anderson took fourth at 16.86m (54-8.75), and Estes took fifth at 16.13m (52-11.00).

In the women’s discus, redshirt junior Alex Hartig took third at a personal best 54.63m (179-03), topping her mark from last season. Redshirt senior Anna Jelmini threw 54.07m (177-05) for fourth, and Jarchow took fifth at 42.90m (140-09).

Jelmini took second in the shot put at 15.85m (52-0.00), while Hartig placed fifth at14.71m (48-3.25). Weber followed in sixth at 14.26m (46-9.50).

Hartig closed out the night with the javelin, where she took second with a throw of 43.84m (143-10).

Senior Alycia Herring won the high jump competition with a season best 6.22m (20-5.00), and sophomore Jasmine Gibbs jumped a season best 6.13m (20-1.50) for second. Also for ASU, freshman Kira Moreland took sixth at 5.57m (18-3.25).

Sophomore Josh Dixon and McBride went 3-4 on the men’s side of the long jump at 7.31m (23-11.75) and 7.10m (23-3.50). Senior Jordan Benesh followed in fifth at 6.68m (21-11.00).

In the triple jump, Dixon and Benesh went 2-3 with marks of 15.12m (49-7.25) and 14.56m (47-9.25), respectively.

ASU swept the top three positions in the women’s pole vault, led by senior Shaylah Simpson’s season-best clearance of 4.08m (13-4.50). Senior Heather Arseneau and sophomore Andrea Kemmerrer each followed at 3.73m (12-2.75). The clearance for Kemmerrer marks a new personal best. Redshirt junior Amber Pasternak cleared 3.58m (11-9.00) for fifth while seniors Kelli Gibson and Linda Kuenzi each cleared 3.43m (11-3.00).

Redshirt junior Michael Ohakwe won the men’s discus competition with a season-best 54.08m (179-09), while Long followed in fifth at a personal best 52.35m (171-09). Redshirt senior Nathan Estes also set a new personal best at 47.52m (155-11), as did redshirt freshman Thomas Anderson at 44.77m (146-10).

Freshman Micha Auzenne set a new personal best in the 100m hurdles at 13.77 for third, while junior Cameron Taylor set a personal best at 14.02 for second in the 11m hurdles.

Juniors Brianna Tate and Sara McDonald each set personal bests in the 400m dash as they went 2-3 with times of 52.32 and 54.35, respectively. Tate’s time moves her from No. 10 to No. 8 in the ASU top-10.

Senior Keith Cleveland set a new personal best in the 400m dash with the win at 46.27. Fellow senior Will Henry followed in third at 47.32.

Senior Asiah Gooden and sophomore Jasmine Gibbs went 2-3 in the 100m dash with times of 11.68 and 11.75, respectively. Gooden’s time is a new personal best while Gibbs’ is a new best this season. Also for ASU, freshman LaTroya Franklin took fifth at 11.84 and Auzenne followed in sixth at 11.91, a new personal best.

In the 200m dash, Gooden led ASU with a third-place time of 23.95, and Franklin followed in fourth at 24.03.

Redshirt senior Ryan Milus and redshirt junior Devan Spann went 1-2 in the 100m dash with times of 10.31 and 10.42, respectively. Freshman Marcus Setoki took fourth at 11.00. Spann and Milus went 1-2 in the 200m, both with season-best times of 20.86 and 20.87.

ASU went 2-3 in the men’s 800m with redshirt sophomore Jesus Rivera finishing at 1:51.16, and sophomore Michael Julian following at 1:51.62.

Senior Sarah Geren ran a personal best in the 400m hurdles at 58.40, for third overall while redshirt sophomore Cody Moore took fourth at 56.01 on the men’s side, and Taylor ran 57.76.

Sophomore Adriana Olivas took third in the 3000m run at 9:47.17, while freshman Bernie Montoya led the Sun Devils on the men’s side with a time of 8:29.56. Redshirt senior Steven Schnieders took second in the 3000m steeplechase at 9:14.01, while freshman CJ Albertson took fourth at 9:25.62.

Up next, the Sun Devils will make the trip to Pullman, Wash., for the 2014 Pac-12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships on May 17-18.
