Pac-12 announces weekly baseball honors

Oregon Athletics/Oregon State Athletics
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. —  OREGON catcher Shaun Chase has been named Pac-12 Player of the Week and OREGON STATE left-handed pitcher Jace Fry has been tabbed Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week for April 28-May 4, the Conference office announced Monday.

Chase, a Phoenix, Ariz. native, propelled the Ducks to a sweep at home against Conference-foe Arizona over the weekend as he went 7-for-11 (.636) with 7 RBI, one double, three home runs and four runs scored. The junior, who also recorded an on-base percentage of .692 and a slugging percentage of 1.545, posted two of his home runs in a 6-1 victory in the series opener on Friday. The third—a grand slam—came in game three on Sunday with the Ducks up 1-0 in the eighth inning, putting the game out of reach and securing the huge league series sweep. In a game that went to extra innings on Saturday, Chase led off the 10th inning with a single, which ultimately proved to be the game-winning run in the 7-6 game two victory.

This is Chase’s first-career Pac-12 Player of the Week honor and Oregon’s 13th all-time selection. He is the second position player for the Ducks to earn the honors in 2014 as teammate Mitchell Tolman was named the Player of the Week on April 14.

Fry, a junior from Beaverton, Ore., recorded his third complete-game shutout of the season, giving up just one hit and one walk in nine of innings of work in a 5-0 victory at California on Sunday. The performance helped the Beavers complete their second-consecutive Conference series sweep. The lefty faced just three batters over the minimum while striking out six en route to his ninth win of the season. This season he has held opponents to one hit or less while working seven innings or more four times and over his last 17 innings has allowed just two hits while posting 17 strikeouts. His 1.59 ERA currently ranks fourth in the Pac-12, and his .98 ERA in seven league games is also good for fourth in the Conference.

Fry picks up his third-career Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week nod—all three coming this season— and the 72nd overall for the Beavers. He is also the first pitcher to earn a weekly award more than once in 2014.

The Ducks and the Beavers face off in a non-conference contest on Tuesday night in Eugene at 6 p.m. live on the Pac-12 Networks. Oregon then heads out on the road for the rest of the week, first at Portland on Wednesday, then south for an important league series at Arizona State. Sunday’s series finale will be on Pac-12 Networks at 12 p.m. PT. Oregon State will return home after Tuesday to host UCLA in a three-game series over the weekend with all games set to be televised live on the Pac-12 Networks. First pitch on Friday is a 7:30 p.m. PT.
