Women’s Golf Set for Stillwater, NCAA Regionals
TUCSON, Ariz. – No. 8 University of Arizona women’s golf (ranking by Golfweek.com) will continue the championships portion of the spring season with the NCAA Central Regional Championships, hosted by Oklahoma State, this weekend. Held at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla., competition will take place Thurs.-Sat., May 8-10. One round of play will be contested each day with 5:30 a.m. and 10 a.m. MST/PT tee times daily. Karsten Creek Golf Club is a par 72, 6,200-yard course.
Arizona earned the No. 4 seed and is paired with No. 5 seed LSU and No. 6 seed Oklahoma State for the opening round on Thursday. The Wildcats, Tigers and Cowgirls will tee at 6:36 a.m. MST/PT.
Juniors Manon Gidali and Kendall Prince, sophomore Lindsey Weaver and freshmen Jessica Vasilic and Wanasa Zhou will be competing for the Wildcats this weekend. By Golfweek.com, Weaver is ranked No. 13 and Zhou is No. 47. By golfstat.com, Weaver is ranked No. 19 and Zhou sits at No. 100.
No. 3 UCLA, No. 4 Arkansas, No. 9 Alabama, No. 10 Arizona, No. 15 LSU, No. 16 Oklahoma State, No. 21 Florida, No. 22 North Carolina, No. 25 Ohio State, No. 28 Miami (Fla.), No. 33 Mississippi State, No. 35 California, No. 39 Kent State, No. 40 Kansas, No. 45 Texas, No. 46 UNLV, No. 51 Colorado, No. 52 SMU, No. 57 Minnesota, No. 59 Harvard, No. 95 Lamar, Wichita State, LIU-Brooklyn and Siena will play in Stillwater this weekend. This weekend’s regional championship marks Arizona’s 22nd season playing at the regional level. Of those 22 qualifications, 18 have led to a trip to the NCAA Championships. Eight teams and two individuals will advance from each regional site. While Oklahoma State hosts the Central, Florida State hosts the East and Washington hosts the West.
Two Wildcats picked up league honors to go with a runner-up finish and a Territorial Cup point at the Pac-12 Championships. Weaver was named first-team All-Pac-12 in her first season with the Wildcats. She earned a runner-up finish at the conference tournament. The Wildcats have had a first-team all-league honoree four of the last five seasons. Zhou was named Pac-12 Honorable Mention in her first season with the Wildcats. She earned her fifth top-20 finish with her 20th-place performance at the 2014 Pac-12 Championships.
Last time out, the Wildcats earned a runner-up finish at the 2014 Pac-12 Championships. No. 11 Arizona and No. 1 USC shared the runner-up finish with scores of 870 (+6). The Wildcats shot rounds of 287, 287 and 296. Weaver was Arizona’s top finisher for the fifth time this season. She fired a 214 (-2) with rounds of 68, 72 and 74. She is the Wildcats’ top finisher at the conference championships since Lorena Ochoa also earned a runner-up finish in 2002.
