NCAA women's tennis tournament results: Three Pac-12 schools advance

Four teams represented the Pac-12 Conference in opening-round action of the NCAA women’s team tennis tournament on Friday. Cal (#6), Stanford (#11), and USC (#16) were seeded in the field of 32 while the Arizona Wildcats entered without a number attached to their name.

Arizona

The Wildcats were the only Pac-12 team dismissed on Friday, falling 4-3 to the Florida State Seminoles. The loss ends the Wildcats’ season at 17-6 in a fashion coach Vicky Maes called “heartbreaking.” Certainly, any time a season ends it’s tough, but this also marked the first time all season that the Wildcats had secured the doubles point and lost. Unfortunately, Arizona lost all four of its singles matches and subsequently were ousted from the big dance.

California

Transitioning to our advancing narrative, the Golden Bears were swiftly victorious at home against Fairleigh Dickinson. The Pac-12 Conference champions won 4-0, setting themselves up for a second round match – in Berkeley – against the Waves of Pepperdine. The opening serve is scheduled for noon PT.

USC

Also serving things up tomorrow will be the triumphant Trojans and the conquering Cardinal. Both teams were hosting their opening round – and now second round – matches and both won by a 4-0 decision. For the Trojans, it was seemingly business as usual, handling each match in convincing straight sets. They’ll next host Michigan on Saturday at 3pm PT.

Stanford

Of course the score of Stanford’s effort suggests ease – and it was – but it wasn’t that simple to get things started. They defeated the Quinnipiac Bobcats 4-0 and dropped zero sets in advancing. But an epic 5-hour match featuring Long Beach State and Tulsa delayed the Cardinal’s title defense nearly two-and-a-half hours. Ultimately, it was the 49ers of Long Beach who earned the right to play on Saturday and face Stanford, in Palo Alto, at 1pm PT.
