Men’s Golf Finishes Second Round in San Antonio
SAN ANTONIO, Texas – At the conclusion of a windy second day of the NCAA San Antonio Regional, both Arizona players have moved up in the individual rankings. The three-day tournament is being hosted by UTSA at Briggs Ranch Golf Club (par 72, 7,247 yards) and will conclude on Sat., May 17.
“Today was challenging with the windy conditions,” head coach Jim Anderson said. “The hole locations were fairly accessible and the greens were receptive. We did a great job with ball striking in the wind and now we need to see more putts drop.”
For the Wildcats, senior Erik Oja moved up a spot in the rankings to finish in 10th place. Oja shot an identical score to yesterday’s round with a 71 (-1). He recorded an eagle on his second hold of the day and had three birdies. Through the first two rounds, Oja is now 142 (-2), which is eight strokes from the first place contender.
Junior Alex McMahon improved from 44th place to a tie for 23rd. McMahon shot his best round thus far with a 70 (-2). He also had five birdies on the day. At the end of the second day, his total is now 145 (+1).
"Hopefully for tomorrow I can play the par 3s better than I have been," McMahon said. "If I can play those holes well, I should have a chance to post a pretty good number."
After a round with winds of 10-15 mph and finishing in temperatures reaching the 80s, Julien Brun of TCU continues to lead the individual field with another round of 67 (-5). SMU’s Bryson Dechambeau moved down a spot to No. 2 with a round of 71 (-1).
The final round of the regional will begin at 7:30 a.m. CT. McMahon will begin play at 9:40 a.m. CT with Oja following just 10 minutes after.
“We are very proud to have both Alex and Erik finish under par today and look for a strong finish tomorrow,” Anderson said. “The plan will be to play aggressive tomorrow. We can’t leave any shots out there so it is time to take well calculated risks and have a great final round.”
