Pac-12 announces weekly baseball honors
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. — ARIZONA STATE shortstop Drew Stankiewicz has been named Pac-12 Player of the Week and OREGON STATE left-handed pitcher Ben Wetzler has been tabbed Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week for May 12-18, the Conference office announced Monday.
Stankiewicz led the offense for the Sun Devils, who went 4-0 over the week, including a home sweep against league-foe Utah, to stretch a season-high win streak to six games. The junior batted .389 (7-for-18) with five RBI, two doubles, one home and five runs scored. He added two stolen bases while posting a .450 on-base percentage and a.667 slugging percentage. In two of the four games, the Gilbert, Ariz. native tied his career-high with three hits and set a career-high with three RBI in the road win over UNLV on May 13. He has tallied at least two hits in five of his past eight games, while he scored a run in all four games over the week. His best performance came on Sunday as he recorded a season-high seven total bases and went 3-for-5 (.389) with two RBI, two runs scored, a double and a solo home run to help ASU secure the sweep.
This is Stankiewicz’s first-career Pac-12 Player of the Week honor and Arizona State’s Conference-leading 105th all-time selection. He is the first position player for the Sun Devils to earn the honors in 2014 as teammates Ryan Kellogg and Darin Gillies were previously named Pitchers of the Week this season.
Wetzler, a senior from Clackamas, Ore., turned in a stellar performance from the mound on Sunday, throwing a complete game shutout to propel Oregon State to a series-clinching 3-0 win over No. 5 Washington. The lefty held the Conference’s leading offense to two hits and just four total base runners in nine innings of work. In his first shutout of the season and third in his career, Wetzler recorded his second-highest strikeout total in 2014 with nine. It also marked his second complete game of the season and fifth of his career. In picking up the win, the senior increased his school-record for wins to 34 and set the the OSU record for most inning pitched in a career with 351 1/3. With the shutout, Wetzler moved his season ERA to 0.84, which currently leads the country, and lowered his career mark to 2.61. The performance was huge for the Beavers, who hold a two-game lead in the Conference with three league games left to play.
Wetzler picks up his first-ever Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week nod and the 73rd overall for the Beavers. He is second OSU pitcher to earn the weekly award in 2014 as teammate Jace Fry has earned the honor three different times in 2014.
ASU will close out the last week of the regular season with its last non-league game against Abilene Christian at home on Tuesday night followed by a trip to Pullman, Wash. to take on the Cougars in the final league series of 2014. First pitch on Friday is at 7 p.m. PT in a game that will air live on the Pac-12 Networks. The Beavers will wrap up their non-conference slate with a Tuesday night non-league contest at rival Oregon before heading to USC for the weekend for their last Conference series of 2014. OSU needs just one win to clinch their second-consecutive Pac-12 title. The series kicks off Friday at the home of the Trojans, live on Pac-12 Networks at 4 p.m. PT.
