NCAA women's tennis: Cal's Chi, UCLA's Van Nguyen on to quarterfinals

The Pac-12 will be represented by two singles players in the quarterfinals of the NCAA women’s tennis championships but has been completely wiped out of the doubles bracket at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga. The ACC now takes over the lead in the women’s singles bracket for most conference representatives, as ACC players combined to go 5-0 on Friday.

California

The Lynn Chi locomotive is still rolling full steam ahead. The 24th-ranked Chi took down eighth-seeded Jennifer Brady of UCLA with relative ease (6-3, 6-2) to knock off her second seeded opponent in three days. It’s only going to get tougher for Chi, however, as she will now have to square off against the No. 1 ranked player in the land – Jamie Loeb of North Carolina. Loeb upended Texas’ Breaunna Addison  7-5, 6-4 in the round of 16 to improve to 53-3 on the season (yes, 53-3). That said, Chi has to be playing with a lot of confidence right now, so it should make for an intriguing quarterfinal matchup.

Stanford

Singles and doubles are now over for the Card, as no member of Nerd Nation moved past the round of 16. Coach Lele Forood’s last two hopes were Kristie Ahn and Carol Zhao in both brackets, but Ahn had to retire due to injury down a set to Georgia State’s Abigail Tere-Apisah (who has been blowing past opponents in the singles draw) and Zhao dropped the Stanford-UCLA singles championship rubber match to Chanelle Van Nguyen 7-5, 6-2 (Stanford and UCLA split two singles matches in the round of 32).

Different bracket, same result for Stanford in doubles, as Ahn and Zhao dropped a two-setter to 5-8 seed Monique Albuquerque and Clementina Riobueno of Miami 6-4, 7-5, but not before fighting back from 5-3 down in the second to force a deuce set.

 

UCLA

UCLA is down to one player remaining in the singles bracket after Friday wrapped up. While the aforementioned 9-16 seed Chanelle Van Nguyen took care of Zhao in straight sets, second-seeded Robin Anderson was upset in two sets by Virginia’s Danielle Collins (6-1, 6-4) and Jennifer Brady, as mentioned above, lost in two sets to Cal’s Lynn Chi (6-3, 6-2 if you don’t want to scroll back to the top of the page). As the lone Bruin left in the women’s singles bracket, Van Nguyen will face Duke’s Ester Goldfeld, who defeated Stanford’s Krista Hardebeck in the round of 32.

USC

USC had one team in the doubles bracket entering Friday’s round of 16, but that duo of Brynn Boren and Zoë Katz lost to Auburn’s tandem of Pleun Burgmans and Emily Flickinger in two hard-fought sets (7-5, 7-5). USC is now completely out of the tennis championships on both the men’s and women’s side. Plenty of good memories to take back from Athens, however, as the men won the team national championship and the women’s team pushed top-seeded Georgia to the brink in the round of 16.

 

Lynn Chi and Chanelle Van Nguyen will be back in action Saturday for the quarterfinals, and the Pac-12 Post will wrap up the coverage as always.
