German Post Marie Gülich Signs With WBB
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Marie Gülich, a versatile 6-foot-5 post from Germany, has signed with the Oregon State women’s basketball program for the 2014-15 season, Head Coach Scott Rueck announced Wednesday.
The native of Altenkirchen has an extensive background at the highest levels of FIBA international competition. She is currently on the German U20 National Team which will be in Jičín, Czech Republic for exhibition games from May 29-31 and will train throughout June in advance of the FIBA U20 ‘B’ European Championship in Sofia, Bulgaria in early July.
“Marie is a talented basketball player who possesses and multi-faceted skill set,” Rueck said. “She plays both ends of the floor at a high level and her many years of international experience have given an added maturity to her game. Not only is she a perfect complement to our roster on the floor, but her charismatic personality and character fit in extremely well with this program. I’m happy to welcome Marie to the Oregon State women’s basketball family.”
In previous stints on German national squads, Gülich has represented her country at the FIBA U18 ‘B’ European Championships for Women in 2012 and 2011. Germany finished eighth overall with a 4-4 record in Macedonia in 2012 when Gülich averaged 6.0 points and 6.1 rebounds and was 10th in the entire competition with 1.1 blocks per game. She scored 3.6 points and grabbed 3.0 rebounds per game in Hungary in 2011, as the Germans came in ninth.
At the U16 ‘B’ European Championship for Women in Greece in 2010, Gülich paced Germany in scoring (12.4 ppg) and blocks (2.3 bpg) as her team went 6-3 and finished fifth.
Gülich joins junior college transfer Jen’Von’Ta Hill as recent signings that bolster a strong returning nucleus for OSU, one which led the Beavers to a record-setting season in 2013-14. Oregon State went 24-11 overall, 13-5 in the Pac-12, won its first NCAA Tournament game since 1995 and returns 95 percent of its scoring and 96 percent of its rebounds this fall.
