Tarrago Wins Gold Again; Antal, Illes Take Bronze

BUDAPEST, Hungary – Cal sophomore Roser Tarrago is a Gold Medalist for the second summer in a row after Spain defeated The Netherlands 10-5 in the championship game of the 2014 European Championsihps on Saturday.

Meanwhile, fellow Cal sophomores Dora Antal and Anna Illes captured Bronze Medals as Hungary edged Italy 10-9.

Tarrago scored two goals for the Spaniards, who won the FINA World Championships last summer. Tarrago also captured a Silver Medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics.

Tarrago finished the European Championships ranked second with 16 goals and was first with 12 steals.

Antal scored two goals and Illes added one Saturday. Antal, the 2014 MPSF Newcomer of the Year and a First Team All-American, tied for seventh at the European Championships with 11 goals and was fifth with seven steals.

Tarrago and Illes were both All-American Honorable Mention in 2014, when the Bears went 20-10 and advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament. Cal was ranked as high as No. 3 in the country last season, its second-highest ranking ever.

The Bears only lose one senior from last season’s team. Antal, Tarrago and Illes were the team’s top three scorers in 2014.
