Raquel Kops-Jones Wins Western & Southern Open

CINCINNATI – California alumna Raquel Kops-Jones and doubles partner Abigail Spears captured their 10th WTA title when they won the doubles crown at the Western & Southern Open on Sunday at the Lindner Family Tennis Center. The duo defeated Timea Babos and Kristina Mladenovic when a spinal injury to Mladenovic forced her team to retire.

Kops-Jones and Spears led Babos – the sister of former Golden Bear Susie Babos – and Mladenovic, 6-1, 2-0, when the match ended. It marked the 12th WTA title for Kops-Jones.

Earlier this summer, Kops-Jones and Spears fell in the semifinals of the Bank of the West Classic. The defending doubles champions, the top-seeded Kops-Jones and Spears lost in an upset to Paula Kania and Katerina Siniakova, 6-7(3), 6-3, 12-10, in Stanford, Calif.
