Aly Moon Named Pac-12 Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week

Aug 26, 2014

TEMPE, Ariz. – Sun Devil soccer freshman midfielder Aly Moon was named the Pac-12 Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, according to an announcement by the Conference office on Tuesday.

Moon was recognized by the Pac-12 for her performances in ASU’s season opening contests – a 2-2 tie vs. Texas and a 5-2 win vs. Hawaii – at the Outrigger Resorts Shootout hosted by the University of Hawaii.

Moon earned tournament MVP honors for her important contributions in ASU’s results. In ASU’s opener vs. Texas on Friday, Moon led the Sun Devils with three shots and had one of the game’s most important plays when she drew a penalty kick with 5:31 remaining in regulation. Teammate McKenzie Berryhill would knock in the ensuing PK to tie the game at 2-2, completing ASU’s comeback from two goals down.

In Sunday’s game vs. Hawaii, Moon tied the single-game school record with three goals in ASU’s 5-2 win. Moon also had an assist giving her seven points for the game, which tied the second-highest, single-game total in school history.

The single-game record Moon tied is also held by current Sun Devil Cali Farquharson (2012) and former Sun Devils Karin Volpe (2010) and Patrice Feulner, who accomplished the feat three times (2x in 2000 and 1x in 2001). Moon becomes the third Sun Devil to accomplish the feat as a freshman, joining Feulner and Farquharson.

Moon scored ASU’s first goal of the game in the 22nd minute to tie the game at 1-1. In the 34th minute, she assisted on the first goal of teammate Rachel Ometer’s career, which gave ASU a 2-1 advantage. Moon would then put the game out of reach in the second half when she scored two more goals in the span of 2:16 to give ASU a 4-1 advantage.

In addition to the aforementioned MVP and Pac-12 honors honors, Moon was also named to TopDrawerSoccer.com’s team of the week.

Joining Moon on the Outrigger Resorts All-Tournament team were junior defender McKenzie Berryhill, redshirt sophomore midfielder Lucy Lara and freshman defender Madison Stark.

The Sun Devils return to action later this week when they travel to the state of Illinois for matches at Illinois on Friday (7 pm CT/5 pm PT) and at Loyola Chicago on Sunday (1 pm CT/11 am PT).
