No. 25 Volleyball Sweeps Past San Diego State In Opener

HONOLULU—The No. 25 Arizona State volleyball team opened the 2014 season with a sweep, taking down San Diego State, 25-18, 25-21, 25-14, in the opening match of the Chevron Rainbow Wahine Invitational, at Hawaii’s Stan Sheriff Center.

With the win, the Sun Devils sit at 1-0, while the Aztecs open the year at 0-1.

Junior Macey Gardner and sophomore Kizzy Willey led the way with 10 kills apiece, while junior Whitney Follette hit a blistering .571 for the match with eight kills and no errors.

ASU was able to over come 15 service errors with eight aces throughout the match, including four in the opening set. Follette, Willey, and junior Bianca Arellano each recorded two, while sophomores BreElle Bailey and Genevieve Pirotte had one apiece.

The Sun Devils kept the errors down to only eight on the night for a .294 hitting percentage, and forced 20 San Diego State miscues that kept the Aztecs to a .062 hitting percentage for the match. In the third set, ASU hit .440 with 11 kills and no errors.
