Cougars Finish Strong to Open Husky Invitational

Sep 22, 2014

BREMERTON, Wash. – Led by redshirt-senior Sang Lee, the Washington State University men’s golf team carded a 592 (+16) in the opening 36 holes of the Husky Invitational on the Gold Mountain Golf Club’s Olympic Course. WSU is currently tied with BYU for eighth place in the 15-team field. The WSU Cougars notched a combined 14 birdies in the back nine of the second round to finish 5-over par (293). UCLA (E, 576) currently leads team competition.

Lee finished 3-under par (141) on the day, carding five birdies in the second round and finished the day in third place. Lee is three strokes back from UCLA’s Jake Knapp in first place. WSU redshirt-senior Charlie Mroz put in the second-best performance of the day, saving par in the second round with four birdies in the back nine. Mroz carded a two-round 145 (+1) and is currently tied for 11th.

“Sang and Charlie were rock solid all day,” Cougar Head Coach Garrett Clegg said. “Unfortunately, as a team, we struggled most of the day until the last nine holes. Our first round was not a good round. We made a lot of mistakes, but once we got to the 14th or 15th hole of the second round we got on a tear. That was huge because we left a lot out there on the other holes. The guys did a tremendous job in those final holes.”

Freshman Derek Bayley carded a 76 (+4) in each of his rounds and is currently tied for 44th. Junior Evan Omelia (+10, 154) and senior Alex Wagner (+14, 158) finished tied for 56th and 67th, respectively.

The Husky Invitational concludes tomorrow with the final round of play beginning off holes 1 and 10 at 7:20 a.m. Live scoring will be available at birdiefire.com for the tournament's duration. Tournament results and recap will be available at the conclusion of competition at wsucougars.com.
