Pac-12 volleyball season starts this week

Pac-12 volleyball has seen a successful non-conference schedule thus far, as league teams have posted 112 wins against a slate that included 40 opponents that advanced to the NCAA Tournament last year, wins against 13 ranked opponents, and victories over 12 teams from the Big Ten, widely considered one of the top two best volleyball leagues in the country alongside the Pac-12. The Conference looks ahead to this week as the always-competitive league play begins on Tuesday ... For the third-consecutive week, seven Pac-12 teams are ranked in the top 25 of the AVCA Coaches Poll with STANFORD holding on to the top spot for the third-straight polling. Three teams are ranked in the top 10 for the fifth-straight week, with both WASHINGTON and USC moving up a spot to No. 4 and No. 9, respectively. OREGON has climbed to No. 13 after starting 2014 unranked, while ARIZONA, ARIZONA STATE and UCLA come in at No. 18, 19 and 20 ... Tuesday marks the start of league play with all six rivalry matches being televised on the Pac-12 Networks. A top-25 clash between the Bruins and Trojans is one of two matches on Tuesday, while the Sun Devils and Wildcats take the floor on Wednesday. With seven league teams ranked, fans will be treated to some of the best matchups in the country on a near-weekly basis during Pac-12 play ... Pac-12 weekly honors went to UW’s Krista Vansant, the reigning AVCA National Player of the Year, who was voted the Offensive Player of the Week, while teammate Tia Scambray was tabbed the Freshman of the Week. Both led the Huskies to claim the Pac-12/Big Ten Showcase title ... OREGON STATE’s Arica Nassar, who leads the nation in blocks per set, was voted the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week ... Statistically speaking, Stanford redshirt freshman Merete Lutz has been a steady hitter and is leading the NCAA in hitting percentage, while UCLA’s Karsta Lowe is the nation’s leader in kills and points per set.
