Orlando, Fla.—Senior Noemi Jimenez and sophomore Monica Vaughn lead the Arizona State women’s golf team after the first round of play at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate.  The Sun Devils are currently tied for eighth place with last year’s NCAA Champion Duke after shooting a 5-over 293 at the par-72, 6,247-yard Watson Course at Reunion Resort in Orlando, Fla.

In-state rival Arizona sits atop the leader board after round one with an 8-under 280, with second-place South Carolina two strokes back.  The Wildcats’ Wanasa Zhou and the Gamecocks’ Justine Dreher are tied for first on the individual leader board after shooting a 4-under 68.

Jimenez, golfing in the No. 1 spot for the Sun Devils, is tied for 11th place with teammate Vaughn with a 1-under 71.  Jimenez carded four birdies for the day, while Vaughn tallied three of her own.

Freshmen Roberta Liti and Sophia Zeeb are tied for 40th and 47th place, respectively.  After getting off to a hot start with back-to-back birdies on holes 11 and 12, Zeeb struggled to maintain that groove, finishing out the round with five bogeys.  Liti was even par on the back nine, but carded three bogeys after making the turn at 18.

Senior Emilie Alonso had a rough first day back, shooting a 7-over 79 for the day.  Alonso recorded four bogeys on the back nine and three more on the front nine.  She is currently tied for 56th.

Round two action begins tomorrow at 8:00 a.m at Watson Course in Orlando, Fla.  Arizona State will tee off on hole 10 with Alabama and Duke.  Live scoring is available on www.golfstat.com.
