Farquharson (Offensive) and Gonzalez (Defensive) Both Earn Pac-12 Women’s Soccer Awards

TEMPE, Ariz. – Sun Devil soccer junior forward Cali Farquharson (Offensive) and senior midfielder Brianna Gonzalez (Defensive) both earned Pac-12 Women’s Soccer Player of the Week honors, according to an announcement by the league office on Monday.

Both players were recognized for their performances in ASU’s 1-1 draw against top-ranked, unbeaten and defending national champion UCLA on Friday.

Farquharson scored her team-leading ninth goal in the 49th minute of Friday’s contest, her fourth straight game scoring at least one goal (seven goals during that stretch). Farquharson became only the seventh player in 26 games to score a goal against UCLA, who came into Friday’s game on a 30-game unbeaten streak.

It’s the second time in three weeks Farquharson, who leads the Pac-12 in goals per game (1.0 – sixth in the nation) and points per game (2.22 – seventh in the nation), has earned the award. Earlier this month Farquharson earned Pac-12 offensive honors after scoring five goals, including the second hat-trick of her career to go along with one assist in ASU’s wins over New Mexico State and Nevada. The three goals Farquharson scored against Nevada came in a span of less than six minutes (5:46).

Gonzalez played all 110 minutes and helped lead a defensive effort that held the Bruins scoreless for the first 66-plus minutes of the game on Friday. Although UCLA would eventually tie the game, Gonzalez, who was responsible for marking the Bruins’ top scorer Sam Mewis, helped provide the Sun Devils’ back line and goalkeeper Chandler Morris (11 saves) with support to ensure that ASU would come away with a positive result. The Bruins came into the game having scored multiple goals seven times, including three or more goals on four occasions.

Gonzalez, who transferred to ASU from UC Riverside prior to the start of the 2013 season, has been one of ASU’s top performers in the midfield this season, starting nine of 10 games.

Gonzalez becomes the fourth different Sun Devil to earn a Pac-12 Player of the Week award this season joining Farquharson, sophomore Mckenzie Grossman (Defensive Player of the Week/Sept. 8) and freshman Aly Moon (Offensive Player of the Week/Aug. 26).

Currently on a seven-game unbeaten streak (6-0-1), their best since 2010 (also seven games/6-0-1), the Sun Devils (7-1-2, 0-0-1 Pac-12) will continue Pac-12 play this week when they host Oregon on Friday (7 p.m.) and Oregon State on Sunday (1 p.m.) at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium.
