Men’s Golf in the Hunt at Home
PULLMAN, Wash. – Led by a strong second round, the Washington State University men’s golf team is currently in third place at the Itani Quality Homes Collegiate at WSU’s Palouse Ridge Golf Club. The Cougars, hosting on the par-70 track, finished the day 16 strokes under par (544), and three strokes back from first-place Oregon (-19, 541). WSU is just one stroke back from USC (-18, 543) in second.
“It was just an all around really solid job from everybody – top to bottom,” Cougar Head Coach Garrett Clegg said. “Everybody contributed, and we hung in there and played solid all day. We’re going to have to play really good golf tomorrow. The teams that are around us are great teams, and we went toe-to-toe with them all day long and matched them shot-for-shot. We’re going to have to do that tomorrow in tough conditions. It’s great to have these teams at our course.”
Redshirt-senior Sang Lee led the Cougars, finishing 8-under par (133). Lee carded five birdies on the front nine in his second round and carded a 65 (-5). Lee is currently tied for fourth and sits two strokes back from a first-place tie between USC’s Rico Hoey and Oregon’s Aaron Wise (-9, 131). WSU’s Charlie Mroz is currently tied for ninth after shooting 4-under (66) in the second round. Mroz jumped 16 spots from the first to second round, and finished the day with an eagle on the par-5, 551-yard 18th hole. Senior Michael Anderson also notched a sub-par score, carding a 68 (-2) in the opening round before saving par in the second round. Anderson is currently tied for 21st.
“Sang and Charlie continued to be awesome,” Clegg said. “Michael was just rock solid. The guys played well.”
Redshirt-senior Alex Wagner provided a scoring round in the opening round, shooting 2-under par (68). Wagner is currently tied for 43rd. Freshman Derek Bayley added a scoring round in the second round, carding a 69 (-1) and is tied for 32nd. Junior Evan Omelia, competing as an individual, is tied for 21st after shooting 2-under par (138). Freshman Brian Mogg, also competing as an individual, carded a 139 (-1) and is tied for 26th.
