Women’s Golf Runner-Up at Annika Intercollegiate
TUCSON, Ariz. – University of Arizona women’s golf earned a runner-up finish at the Annika Intercollegiate on Tuesday. The 54-hole stroke play event was held Sun.-Tues., Sept. 28-30, at Reunion Resort (par 72, 6,247 yards), in Orlando, Fla.
South Carolina won the team title with an 854 (-10). The Wildcats finished second, ahead of four Pac-12 teams, with an 861 (-3) and daily rounds of 280, 293 and 288. Oklahoma State rounded out the top three with an 862 (-2).
“I’m proud of the ladies for fighting hard today,” head coach Laura Ianello said. “We are not happy finishing second but we tip our hats to the South Carolina Gamecocks. They played well this week and we tried our best to catch them. Annika (Sorenstam) is our best alum to have played in the LPGA and we are motivated to win this tournament in the years to come.”
Senior Manon Gidali was Arizona’s top finisher in a three-way tie for fifth place. She shot rounds of 69, 71 and 72 for a score of 212 (-4). Junior Lindsey Weaver’s score of 216 (E) and rounds of 72 all three days earned her a 14th-place finish.
Senior Kendall Prince finished in a four-way tie for 25th place. She collected rounds of 71, 75 and 73 for a score of 219 (+3). Freshman Krystal Quihuis moved in to the top 40 with a round 71 on Tuesday. She finished with a score of 223 (+7). Sophomore Wanasa Zhou rounded out the Arizona five in a tie for 42nd place. She had rounds of 68, 76 and 80 for a score of 224 (+8).
“Manon (Gidali) lead the way with a top finish, followed by Lindsey (Weaver),” Ianello added. “I was very proud of how Kendall (Prince) and Krystal (Quihuis) really came through for us today. We leave for Chicago on Saturday and my ladies are hungry for a win. The team is excited for what this season will bring.”
Arizona will play next at the Windy City Collegiate Classic, Oct. 6-7, in Chicago, Ill. Northwestern will host the event at Westmoreland Country Club in Wilmette, Ill.
