Fabikova, Manasse Reach Main Draw at All-American

LOS ANGELES – California’s Klara Fabikova and Maegan Manasse won on Wednesday at the Los Angeles Tennis Center to advance to main draw singles at the Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships. Head coach Amanda Augustus will lead four Bears into singles and one Cal pair into doubles when the main draws begin on Thursday.

Junior Lynn Chi and senior Zsofi Susanyi are also in the field for main draw singles, while the duo of Manasse and sophomore Denise Starr earned selection to main draw doubles.

In the qualifying singles third round on Wednesday, Manasse, a sophomore ranked 43rd, advanced by beating Houston’s 68th-ranked Despoina Vogasari, 6-2, 6-2. Fabikova, a junior ranked 60th, defeated Michigan’s 77th-ranked Sarah Lee, 6-3, 7-6(2).

Cal suffered an upset in qualifying singles, as the fifth-seeded, 25th ranked Starr fell to Texas A&M’s 34th-ranked, Nos. 9-16-seeded Saska Gavrilovska, 6-3, 7-5.

In the qualifying doubles final round, Susanyi and Chi – the sixth-seeded and 31st-ranked doubles team – lost in an upset against Miami’s Lina Lilekite and Stephanie Wagner, 6-1, 7-6(8). The Bears had won their second-round match earlier on Wednesday against UCLA’s 56th-ranked Chanelle Van Nguyen/Terri Fleming , 6-2, 6-0.

The tournament will shift venues for main draw singles and doubles, which are slated to run from Thursday through Sunday at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, California.

Main draw singles semifinalists, main draw doubles finalists and main draw consolation champions will receive automatic entry into the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, Nov. 6-9 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, New York.
