This week in Pac-12 football
AROUND THE PAC-12...
Welcome to the Danger Zona: ARIZONA is one of 10 FBS teams remaining undefeated this season. The Wildcats are No. 10 in this week’s AP poll, their highest ranking since it was No. 9 on Oct. 3, 2010...The Wildcats made the biggest leap for an unranked team since the AP went to a 25-team format in 1989...For the second time this season, the Pac-12 has six teams ranked in the AP Top 25. Eight different Pac-12 teams have appeared in the Top 25 this season, with 10 different teams receiving votes.
Road is Where the Heart is: In each of the five Conference games played last weekend, the visiting team came out victorious. To date, road teams are a combined 11-3 in league play. Two of those three home wins were determined at the end of regulation (Arizona’s Hail Mary 49-45 win over California) and in overtime (California’s 59-56 2OT win over Colorado).
Just Average: Washington State senior QB Connor Halliday, who threw for a FBS record 734 yards in a loss to California Saturday, is AVERAGING a FBS-best 508.7 yards per game in six games this season. In the history of the Pac-12, there have been only 15 games where a quarterback has thrown for 508 yards or more. In fact, Halliday owns five of those marks (734, 557, 544, 532, and 521).
Pac-12 QBs Air it Out, Again: The Pac-12’s two-game passing yardage record held by OREGON STATE senior QB Sean Mannion was short-lived. Mannion set the mark of 974 yards in back-to-back games during the 2013 season. That record wasn’t passed on Saturday by one, but three Pac-12 quarterbacks. Thanks to the FBS single-game record 734 yards, Washington State’s Connor Halliday established a two-game record of 1,151 yards (he added 437 yards at Utah on Sat., Sept. 27). ARIZONA STATE’s Mike Bercovici’s two-game total is 998 yards (488 yds vs. UCLA, 510 yds at USC) and CALIFORNIA’s Jared Goff’s two-game mark is 976 yards (449 vs. Colorado, 527 yds at Washington State)... In Saturday’s games alone, Halliday, Bercovici and Goff combined to throw the ball 168 times, completing 113 (.673) for 1,771 yards and 16 TDs, with no interceptions.
Can’t Touch This...: Five FBS quarterbacks have attempted at least 100 passes this season without an interception. Four of those QBs hail from the Pac-12 - USC’s Cody Kessler (177 attempts), OREGON’s Marcus Mariota (128 attempts), UTAH’s Travis Wilson (101 attempts), and WASHINGTON’s Cyler Miles (100 attempts).
