Nashville, Tenn.—The Arizona State women’s tennis team made a solid showing on Friday at the June Stewart Invitational, hosted by Vanderbilt.  Dominating in doubles play, the Sun Devils won three of their four matches.

“It was a really competitive day of tennis,” said ASU head coach Sheila McInerney.  “I was very happy with our doubles, and despite losing more singles matches than we won, I thought we played and competed well.”

Arizona State won both of its doubles matches against Purdue on Friday.  The dynamic duo of sophomore Kassidy Jump and junior Desirae Krawczyk steamrolled Daniela Vidal and Lynda Xepoleas, 6-0, 6-2, while junior Ebony Panoho and junior Stephanie Vlad defeated Deborah Suarez and Andjela Djokovic, 6-3, 6-2.

Splitting its matches with Princeton, Arizona State’s Panoho and Gussie O’Sullivan downed Princeton Cannon and Sara Goodwin in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, while Leighann Sahagun and Alexandra Osborne lost to Amanda Muliawan and Emily Hahn, 4-6, 2-6.

In singles play, the Sun Devils went 1-2 with Princeton and 1-2 with Purdue.  Sahagun nabbed a win against Princeton’s Astra Sharma, edging her out 6-4 in the third set, while Krawczyk took down Purdue’s Suarez in straight sets.

“Vandy, Princeton, and Purdue are all very strong teams and they’re well coached,” added McInerney.  “Desirae and Leighann really played well as they were very aggressive.  We look forward to another competitive day tomorrow.”

Day two of the June Stewart Invitational will begin Saturday morning at 9 CDT/7 MST at Vanderbilt’s Currey Tennis Center in Nashville, Tenn.
