Nashville, Tenn.—Dominating in doubles play, the Arizona State women’s tennis team won all of its doubles matches at the June Stewart Invitational on Saturday.  Overall, the Sun Devils compiled a 4-4 singles mark and 2-0 doubles record in matchups with opponents from Princeton and Vanderbilt.

“I was very pleased with the day of tennis,” said ASU head coach Sheila McInerney.  “The girls played and competed well in both the morning and afternoon sessions.  Desirae [Krawczyk] and Stephanie [Vlad] had nice wins against players from Vandy and Princeton.  Leighann [Sahagun] had another good day, and Ebony [Panoho] and Kassidy [Jump] competed really well.”

Arizona State faced Princeton in the first round of Saturday’s action.  Panoho and Vlad both took down their opponents in straight sets.  Splitting sets with her opponent, Alexandra Osborne fell to Sara Goodwin in the tiebreaker.  Gussie O’Sullivan fell to the Tigers’ Emily Hahn, 6-1, 6-4.

In round one doubles play, Sahagun and Krawczyk took the first set, 6-1.  Princeton’s Cannon and Goepel rallied in the second set to force the tiebreaker, but Sahagun and Krawczyk held on for the win.

In round four singles, the Sun Devils took on the Commodores.  Sahagun downed Vandy’s Elli Yates in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, while Krawczyk edged out Sydney Campbell in the tiebreak.  After losing the first set, 6-3, Jump steamrolled Marie Casares in the second set, 6-0, but ultimately lost in the tiebreaker.

Vlad and Osborne dominated Antal and Robinette in doubles play, taking both sets.

“We want to continue our good play and end well tomorrow,” said McInerney of tomorrow’s final round of the June Stewart Invitational.

Sunday’s play will begin at 9 CDT/7 MST at Vanderbilt’s Currey Tennis Center in Nashville, Tenn.
