Men’s Golf Team Seventh after Opening Round in Georgia

Juniors Jonathan Garrick and Lorens Chan combined for scores of five-under par as the fifth-ranked UCLA men’s golf team was in seventh place after the opening round of the U.S. Collegiate Championship at the Golf Club of Georgia.

The Bruins posted a team score of 287 (-1) and trailed 25th-ranked Virginia (272, -16) by 15 shots. Texas was second at 278 (-10), followed by third place Texas A & M at 281 (-7) and fourth-place Stanford at 283 (-5). Auburn and East Tennessee State were tied for fifth place at 286 (-2).

Individually, Garrick fired a three-under par 69 and Chan posted a two-under 70. Garrick, who made five birdies and two bogeys, was tied for 10th place. Chan was tied for 13th after recording five birdies and three bogeys. Senior Manav Shah and junior Jake Knapp were tied for 46th with scores of 74 (+2). Senior Preston Valder had the drop score of 75 (+3) and was tied for 56th.

Virginia’s Denny McCarthy blistered the course with a nine-under par round of 63 and was the leader in the clubhouse by three shots.
