Morris Named Pac-12 Women’s Soccer Goalkeeper of the Week
TEMPE, Ariz. – Senior Chandler Morris was named the Pac-12 Women’s Soccer Goalkeeper of the Week, according to an announcement by the league office on Monday.
Morris was recognized for her performance in ASU’s 2-0 win over USC on Friday, the Sun Devils’ first win over the Trojans in Los Angeles since 1997.
Morris faced 25 shots from the Trojans and came up with 10 saves (one short of tying her career high). She became only the third goalkeeper this season to record a shutout against the Trojans, who came into last week’s action leading the Pac-12 in goals per game (2.5), including five games with three or more goals.
Morris, who has averaged 8.0 saves in ASU’s last three games, has been nothing short of outstanding during Pac-12 play as she is first in both save percentage (.915) and saves (43) and third in both GAA (0.60) and shutouts (3) in conference games.
Friday’s shutout at USC was the sixth complete-game shutout of the season (6.5 overall) for Morris, who is second on ASU’s all-time list with 18 career shutouts.
Morris becomes the fifth different Sun Devil to earn a Pac-12 Player of the Week award this season, joining junior Cali Farquharson (Offensive Player of the Week/Sept. 15 & Sept, 29), senior Brianna Gonzalez (Defensive Player of the Week/Sept. 29), sophomore Mckenzie Grossman (Defensive Player of the Week/Sept. 8) and freshman Aly Moon (Offensive Player of the Week/Aug. 26).
The Sun Devils return to action this week when they host No. 23 Cal (Friday at 7 p.m.) and No. 4 Stanford (Sunday at 1 p.m.). The team will be honoring its senior class – Jessica Domenichelli, Gonzalez, Morris and Courtney Watson – this weekend. The four seniors will be recognized prior to Sunday’s game vs. Stanford. Both games will be streamed live at http://pac-12.com/videos/arizona-state-university.
