Simi Valley, Calif.—The Arizona State men’s golf team is in second place at the end of day one action at the Bill Cullum Invitational.  Due to dense fog Monday morning at the par-72, 6,819-yard Wood Ranch Golf Club, tee times were delayed.  As a result, the second round was suspended due to darkness and will be completed prior to the final round Tuesday morning.

Morning Round

The Sun Devils finished the first round of the day in fourth place with a 9-under 279.  Southern California sat atop both leader boards at the end of the morning round.  The Trojans led the pack with a 13-under 275, while Rico Hoey held the top spot on the player leader board with a 7-under 65.

Arizona State Juniors Max Rottluff and Jon Rahm stood tied for third with a 5-under 67.  Rottluff was tied for ninth heading into the home stretch, but a late push with three birdies bumped him up the leader board.  Rottluff and Rahm each carded six birdies throughout the round.

Freshman Tobias Eden was the only other Sun Devil under par through 18 holes.  Shooting a 1-under 71, Eden was tied for 31st.  Sophomore Ki Taek Lee struggled throughout the round, trading five birdies for two double bogeys and three bogeys.  His 2-over 74 tied for 61st place.

Rounding out the Sun Devil lineup was Mathias Schjoelberg, who shot a 5-over 77.

Afternoon Round

Through 15 holes, Arizona State sits in second place behind Southern California.  At 14-under, the Sun Devils are five strokes back from the Trojans and six strokes ahead of third-place UC Irvine.

Rahm remains tied for third at 7-under through 33 holes.  After carding a bogey and double bogey in round two, Rottluff slipped from third to sixth place with four holes remaining in the round.

Lee climbed the leader board in the second round of the day.  He carded an eagle on hole six and heads into the 16th hole tied for 21st with teammate Tobias Eden.

Schjoelberg struggled on the front nine, trading birdies for double bogeys, but found his rhythm on the back nine.  The senior heads into Tuesday’s action at 9-over, with two holes remaining in the second round.

Second round action will continue at 8:00 a.m. PT on Tuesday.  The final round will commence immediately upon completion of round two.
