Bears Close Saint Mary’s Fall Invitational
MORAGA, Calif. – The Golden Bears won all their matches on Sunday at the Saint Mary’s Fall Invitational came, but California came away with no hardware. Cal freshman Karla Popovic won twice Sunday to reach the red singles final. However, since Saturday’s rains led to a backlog of matches on Sunday and Sunday’s matches began late as the courts dried, none of the singles finals were played.
Popovic defeated Santa Clara’s eighth-seeded Delphine Rouvillois, 6-0, 6-2, in the red quarterfinals and beat San Francisco’s Marina Nikolic in the semifinals, 6-2, 6-3.
“I was very pleased to see our three youngest Bears have great results in the tournament in Moraga this weekend,” Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. “Lyann and Stephane made great progress in their recovery from shoulder injuries by being able to play doubles this weekend and play successfully. They got a few matches in but should be fully ready to compete in singles and doubles in the ASU Thunderbird Invitational in a couple weeks.
“Karla Popovic had a fantastic weekend. I think she carries on our great tradition of players either winning or making a final, in this case, of a rain-shortened event. She had some quality wins and won pretty convincingly this weekend. I’m happy to see her make some consistent progress and adjustment to the level of play. I think she’s getting better every match.
“We’ll know on Tuesday which Bears get selected for the singles at national indoors, and the rest of the crew will head to ASU if not selected. We have five Bears in the mix for singles selection at indoors, including Karla.”
The Bears next compete in the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships from Nov. 6-9 in Flushing Meadows, New York.
