Women’s Tennis Finishes Strong at Bulldog Classic

Nov 2, 2014

FRESNO, Calif. – The Oregon women’s tennis team wrapped up their fall schedule going 21-8 at the Bulldog Classic Sunday evening, finishing up the day 11-5.

“First and foremost, we would like to thank Fresno State for hosting us this weekend and running such a nice event,” head women’s tennis coach Alison Silverio.

“Our goal this weekend as it’s been all fall has been to consistently compete and be unified. Overall we built upon our foundation and gained positive momentum. I’m proud of the work the team has put in this fall and we are excited to get back out to the courts next week and work some more!”

With Saturday’s round cancelled due to rain, only a couple final rounds were played on Sunday due to teams’ travel arrangements.

In the doubles semifinals, the No. 1-seeded pair of Rose and Tobita defeated the fourth-seeded team of Siena Peri and Dane Vorster from Portland State 8-4. Nicole Long and Allie Hueffner however were unable to replicate the same result, falling to Fresno State’s seconded-seeded team of Rana Sheif Ahmed and Anneka Watts 8-6.

Kadie Hueffner and Marlou Kluiving won their semifinal consolation match over the Vikings’ Tracy Dong and Kelsey Frey 8-4.

Playing in the only final match of the tournament, Rose lost a tooth and nail battle with Fresno State’s Aishwarya Agrawal, 6-3, 7-6, 9-7. The freshman reached the finals when she dispatched PSU’s Dong in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4. The Bulldog’s Agrawal matched up with Rose after she defeated Long 6-1, 2-6 (10-6) in the quartefinals.

In the Blue Flight singles consolation matches Alyssa Tobita finished the weekend 3-0, winning both of her matches on Sunday. The Mililani, Hawaii, product defeated PSU’s Vorster in a tiebreaker 4-6, 6-2, (10-8) to reach the semis. The freshman then flexed her muscle and showed why she was the three-time Oahu Interscholastic Association singles champion, blanking Jessica Stokes in the semis 6-0, 6-0. Lina Åkesson couldn’t shake off FS’s Ahmed in the semifinal consolation match, falling 6-3, 6-2.

Kluiving easily took down Cal State Stanislaus' Jana Diamond in the quarterfinals, 6-3, 6-1 and then made quick work of Sofya Malysheva of Fresno State, winning 6-3, 6-4 in the semifinal match of the Red Flight. Due to the shuffling, Long also played in the Red Flight and held off the Bulldog’s Watts in the semis to win 6-1, 3-6 (11-9).

With matches being shifted around, Åkesson came out victorious over Portland State’s Alexa McDonald in the consolation final of the Red Flight as well.

In the White Flight, A. Hueffner bested Cal Poly’s Abby Bacharach 6-3, 6-2 in the quarterfinals while K. Hueffner defeated Analyssa Tallas of Cal State Stanislaus 6-3, 6-2. Trailing 5-3 in the first set of her semifinal match, K. Hueffner had to withdraw from her match.

The Ducks will now have until January to rest up and recover before heading to Bloomington, Ind., for the Indiana Winter Mock Dual (Jan. 16-19) for their final tune-up before the dual season begins.
