Men’s Basketball Wins Exhibition, 67-51
TUCSON, Ariz. – Five Arizona players scored in double figures and the Wildcats shot better than 60 percent from the field in the second half to pull away from Cal Poly Pomona and win its exhibition tuneup, 67-51, on Sunday.
Stanley Johnson, Kaleb Tarczewski and Gabe York each had 12 points to lead UA, while Brandon Ashley and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson added 10 apiece. Arizona shot 50.0 percent for the game, bolstered by a mark of 61.5 percent in the second half.
The Wildcats overcame a slow start to finish the first half on a 14-0 run, taking a 26-19 lead into the break. Arizona extended that run to 19-0 at the start of the second half and never looked back, as its lead grew to as many as 21 points against a CPP team regarded as one of the top in Division II.
Arizona powered its way to a 39-23 advantage on the glass, led by seven rebounds apiece from Ashley and T.J. McConnell. UA outscored CPP by a 44-18 margin in the paint and 18-7 off of turnovers, while holding the Broncos to 38.8 percent shooting for the game.
McConnell dished out 11 assists in just 28 minutes, highlighting an Arizona offense that tallied 23 assists and committed just 12 turnovers on the night.
