Morris Named Pac-12 Women’s Soccer Goalkeeper of the Week
TEMPE, Ariz. – Sun Devil senior Chandler Morris was named the Pac-12 Women’s Soccer Goalkeeper of the Week, according to an announcement by the league office on Monday.
Morris was recognized for her performance in ASU’s 1-0 Territorial Cup® Series win over Arizona on Friday.
Morris faced 14 shots from the Wildcats, who had scored six goals in their prior four games, and came up with four saves – each one of which was critical in the win.
In the first half, Morris made a diving effort to stop a ball from finding the back of the net. She was able to get just enough of it to stop it from going straight into the goal, then had to quickly gain control of the ball and stop it just inches from the goal line for the save. Late in the first half Morris had another diving save as she deflected a shot that was headed into the far left post. Morris then clinched the win in the final minute as she came up with the save on a shot in which UA’s attacker had a wide open look from 12 yards out.
With the shutout, Morris passed former Sun Devil Kim Bingham for the second-most shutouts (7.5) in a season in school history. It was also the 19th career shutout for Morris, who is second on ASU’s all-time list.
This is Morris’ second Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Week award this season. Last month she earned the honor after coming up with 10 saves (one short of tying her career high) in the Sun Devils’ 2-0 win at USC.
Morris is one of five Sun Devils who have combined to collect seven Pac-12 Player of the Week awards this season. Joining Morris are junior Cali Farquharson (Offensive Player of the Week/Sept. 15 & Sept, 29), senior Brianna Gonzalez (Defensive Player of the Week/Sept. 29), sophomore Mckenzie Grossman (Defensive Player of the Week/Sept. 8) and freshman Aly Moon (Offensive Player of the Week/Aug. 26).
Morris concluded the regular season second in the Pac-12 in save percentage (.849), third in saves (4.39 per game) and fourth in goals against average (0.79).
The Sun Devils (11-5-4, 4-4-3 Pac-12) will find out where they will be headed for the 2014 NCAA Tournament later this afternoon when the Division I Women's Soccer Selection Announcement airs at 2:30 p.m. MT on NCAA.com.
