Cal Women’s Golf Signs Duo To NLI’s
BERKELEY – The California women's golf team has inked two standouts to National Letters of Intent for the 2015-16 season. Joining the Bears next season will be Marianne Li (Bellevue, Wash.) and Amina Wolf (Frankfurt, Germany).
“We’re really proud of our 2015 class,” California head coach Nancy McDaniel said. “We are really encouraged by the energy and enthusiasm for the game and for our program that they will bring with them.”
Li will come to Cal from Bellevue, Wash., where she attended Newport High School. The daughter of Tony Li and Yi-Ju Wu, Marianne was the top-ranked junior golfer in the state of Washington by Golfweek, the Junior Golf Scoreboard and the Polo Golf Rankings. She has qualified for five USGA events over the past three years: three times at the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links (2011, 2012, 2014) and twice at the U.S. Girls’ Junior (2012, 2014) where she had an eighth-place finish in stroke play at the 2014 edition. A two-time member of the AJGA Rolex Jr. All-American Team, Li has won five AJGA Open Events in her career – the 2012 Sunriver Junior Open, 2013 IZOD AJGA Championship, 2013 Stockton Junior Open, 2014 Ryan Moore Junior Championship and the 2014 AJGA Junior at Mayacama.
Internationally, Li has represented Team USA at the 2014 North Pacific Junior Ladies Team Matches which pit players from British Columbia against American players.
“We’re really excited to have someone from the Northwest and the state of Washington,” McDaniel said. “She is our first player from there. Marianne has proven herself nationally as well as regionally. She is a perfect fit for our program here at Cal both as a student and as a person.”
Wolf comes to Cal from Frankfurt, Germany, where she attended the Goethe-Gymnasium. She has been a recent fixture of the German national team system, spending 2013-14 as a member of the German Girls National Team before moving up to the German Ladies National Team earlier this year. She is a three-time German Girls national champion after claiming the U16 title in 2012 and back-to-back U18 titles in 2013 and 2014. Wolf was the runner-up at the 2013 International German Ladies Amateur in 2013 and also competed at the International European Championships in 2013 and 2014. She has also claimed top five finishes at the German Girls Team Championship in 2013 (2nd) and 2014 (3rd) and claimed third at the Dutch Junior Open (2014).
As a member of the German Girls National Team, Wolf and her team competed at the European Team Championship in 2013 and finished 10th overall.
“Our German ties are strong,” McDaniel said. “Beginning with Pia Halbig and now with our fourth German player in Amina Wolf. Amina brings national German team experience as well as an infectious enthusiasm for the game.”
Li and Wolf will help fill the void left on the Golden Bears roster with the graduations of Jo Ee Kok and Morgan Thompson.
