Pac-12 announces volleyball players of the week

SAN FRANCISCO - The Pac-12 Conference office announced today the Pac-12 Volleyball Players of the Week for the week of Nov. 10-16. COLORADO’s Taylor Simpson was voted the Conference’s Offensive Player of the Week, while ARIZONA’s Penina Snuka was named the Defensive Player of the Week and UTAH’s Adora Anae was tabbed the Freshman of the Week.

Taylor Simpson (Colorado Springs, Colo.) posted 53 kills on 121 total attempts along with 40 digs as the Buffs knocked off previously undefeated WASHINGTON and had a five-set victory over WASHINGTON STATE. In the 3-2 win over the Huskies, Simpson tied a career high with 29 kills and 22 digs, giving her the second 20-20 double-double of her career. The senior outside hitter followed that performance with 24 kills and 18 digs against Washington State on Sunday. With the two wins, Colorado matches its most Pac-12 wins since joining the Conference with nine league victories. The victory over UW was CU’s fifth win against ranked opponents, tying the most in CU history and marking the most since 1996.

Penina Snuka (Gilbert, Ariz.) averaged 6.38 digs and 10.0 assists per set in Arizona’s sweep of No. 10 OREGON and OREGON STATE, totaling 51 digs and 80 assists in the two matches. Her 31-dig performance in the 3-1 win against Oregon State was the fourth most in UA history and the second most in a four-set match for the Wildcats. She opened the week with 20 digs and 33 assists in a 3-1 upset over the Ducks. Snuka also added three blocks, and contributed offensively with seven kills on 22 attempts over the two matches. The sophomore setter’s 11.07 assists per set average on the season is fifth in the Pac-12, while her digs per set mark of 4.04 is eighth.

Adora Anae (Laie, Hawai’i) helped the Utes to a sweep of No. 2 Washington and Washington State, posting two double-doubles while averaging 2.67 kills and 2.56 digs per set over the weekend. The outside hitter tallied 14 kills and 13 digs in the 3-1 win against the Cougars, then continued her solid performance with 10 kills and 10 digs in the 3-2 upset over the Huskies. Utah has now won four-straight Pac-12 matches, including three wins over ranked opponents, with the win against No. 2 UW marking the first time that Utah has knocked off a top-five team since defeating then-No. 1 STANFORD in 2000.

The offensive player of the week accolade is the second for Simpson, with her first coming earlier this season on Nov. 3. It marks the third all-time for the Buffs and the first time the Buffs have won two weekly awards in one season since joining the Pac-12 in 2011. The defensive honor is the first for Snuka after the setter picked up freshman of the week twice in 2013, and is the 35th overall honor for the Wildcats. Anae’s honor is the first of her career and the second-straight freshman of the week honor for the Utes as Eliza Katoa took home the accolade on Nov. 10. The Utes have four weekly honors so far this season, which is the most in a single year for Utah since joining the Conference in 2011, and five honors overall.

Colorado and Utah head to the Bay Area to face Stanford and California this weekend. Arizona also heads west, traveling to play at Washington and Washington State. For more information, including a complete schedule, visit
