STANFORD KNOCKS DOWN UCONN; COUGARS BEAT RANKED FOE
STANFORD made an early statement on Monday night, coming back to defeat top-ranked UConn in overtime, 88-86. The Pac-12 features three teams ranked in the top-20 and another four receiving votes in the AP poll this week. WASHINGTON STATE will look to knock off its second top-25 team this week, following a 16-point win over No. 22 Dayton and 50-point blowout of Idaho State. The Cougars, picked to finish eighth in the Pac-12 preseason polls, host 16/15 Nebraska on Wednesday and Seattle on Friday.
10/13 Texas will be a familiar foe to the Pac-12 this week, playing at 6/1 STANFORD on Thursday, before heading to UCLA on Sunday. It is the second-straight ranked foe for the Bruins and third of four-straight NCAA opponents for UCLA to open the season. Stanford will face its second top-10 opponent in four days with Texas. It will be a busy week for 14/14 CALIFORNIA, who play host to Nevada on Tuesday before heading to Honolulu for the Rainbow Wahine Classic. 20/21 OREGON STATE will face Concordia (Ore.) in its only game in week two. WASHINGTON, following a season opening loss at Oklahoma behind Pac-12 Player of the Week Kelsey Plum, will take on another NCAA team, South Dakota on Thursday, and host Yale on Sunday in the return of the Pac-12’s second winningest coach, Chris Gobrecht, now on the Yale sidelines.
USC split its trip through the Carolina’s, dropping the season opener at defending SEC champion South Carolina before knocking off Davidson. The Women of Troy “state” their case against Long Beach State and Fresno State. Top-15 North Carolina continues its trek against the Pac-12, playing at OREGON on Sunday. UTAH will head to the Midwest for games at Creighton and top-20 Nebraska, while COLORADO continues in the preseason WNIT, ARIZONA is at Texas Tech and ARIZONA STATE hosts Bakersfield.
