Peevyhouse’s Walk-Off Home Run Brings Maroon World Series Title

PHOENIX – Senior left fielder Jake Peevyhouse hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to break open a tie and give Maroon an 11-9 walk-off win in game five and its first Maroon and Gold World Series Championship Sunday morning at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.

Gold went up 2-0 in the top of the first inning and held a commanding lead for the entire game. Catcher RJ Ybarra opened the top of the ninth with a solo home run to left field to put Gold ahead, 9-0, but Maroon responded in a big way in the bottom of the frame.

They tallied nine runs in the ninth before Peevyhouse stepped to the plate to face Gold right-handed closer Ryan Burr with a runner on second and no outs. Peevyhouse sent the first pitch he saw over the fence in right field and was mobbed at home plate as Maroon celebrated its M&G World Series Championship.

Peevyhouse took home game five Most Valuable Player honors, but was already looking ahead to the Devils’ season opener on Feb. 13.

“I’m going to enjoy this title for the rest of the day,” Peevyhouse said. “But come Monday I’m going to get right back to work. There’s only 82 days until we’re on this field again competing toward a spot in Omaha.”

Gold starting right-hander Eder Erives allowed just one hit across five scoreless innings, but took a no-decision. Andrew Snow recorded four RBI on three hits, and a pair of fellow freshmen infielders, Ryan Peep and Ryan Lillard, each drove in runs.

Senior right-hander Darin Gillies earned the start for Maroon and pitched four innings. Sophomore right-hander Seth Martinez tossed four innings of relief and junior right-hander Jordan Aboites took the mound in the ninth.
