Nov 25, 2014

BERKELEY – Senior Christina Higgins was named to the Pac-12 All-Academic Second Team on Tuesday, while five other Cal volleyball student-athletes earned honorable mention.

Juniors Mary McKennon, Lara Vukasovic and Sarah Cole and sophomores Alyssa Jensen and Maddy Kerr took honorable mention. It is the third straight Pac-12 All-Academic acknowledgement for Higgins while McKennon and Vukasovic have been named for two consecutive years. Freshmen are ineligible for the award.

Higgins, a social welfare major, has a 3.70 grade point average. She will graduate next month in 3-and-a-half years. Earlier this month, Higgins was named to the Capital One Academic All-District 8 First Team. She received Pac-12 All-Academic honorable mention in her sophomore and junior years.

McKennon is a student in the prestigious Haas School of Business and carries a 3.34 GPA. Vukasovic is undeclared and has a 3.12 GPA.

Cole, a pre-med student, sports a 3.47 GPA as an integrative biology major. Kerr has the highest GPA on the team at 3.78 while Jensen carries an impressive 3.44 mark. Both Kerr and Jensen are undeclared.

To be eligible for Pac-12 All-Academic honors, student-athletes must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and appear in at least 50 percent of their team’s matches.

The Bears close the 2014 season this week with matches at Washington State on Wednesday and at home against No. 1 Stanford in the Big Spike. Friday is also Senior Day, as Cal honors Higgins and fellow senior Marlee Davis in a pre-match ceremony.
