Boyd Invited to US Women’s Youth National Team Goalkeeper Camp
CHICAGO – California’s freshman goalie and Pac-12 All-Freshman standout Emily Boyd has been called up to a special four-day Women’s Youth National Team Goalkeeper Camp, U.S. Soccer announced Monday. Boyd is one of 16 players invited to the Dec. 14-17 camp at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif.
"To be a starting keeper as a freshman in the Pac-12, you gain experience and maturity very quickly. You become battle-tested week in and week out,” said Golden Bear goalkeeper coach Cori Alexander. “Emily came in with Youth National Team experience on her resume, but has proven over the course of this fall her ability to be a gamechanger and we are very excited for this new opportunity for her to continue to grow at the national team level."
The specialized camp features players ranging in age from 14-18 and includes six players from elite teams at the NCAA collegiate level, plus 10 from youth clubs across the country. Led by longtime U.S. Soccer goalkeeper coach Phil Wheddon, the camp will help the national organization evaluate the technical, biomechanical, psychological, social and physical attributes for long-term development of the top goalkeepers in the Youth National Team player pools.
Boyd earned Pac-12 All-Freshman laurels this season after helping the Bears to the second round of the NCAA Tournament with a 13-6-2 record in goal over the course of more than 1,972 minutes of action. The Seattle, Wash. product allowed only 25 goals this season with 62 saves, a .728 save percentage, and led Cal to seven shutouts (four solo, three combined).
"As a goalkeeper you are always told you are the hero or the goat. Emily had a taste of both those this season, and that is what drives her competitive nature,” Alexander said. “She does not want to let her teammates down. She strives to be a leader of this team and aspires to one day pull on the U.S. National Team jersey."
Wheddon will be joined by U.S. Soccer Women’s Technical Director April Heinrichs, U-20 Women’s National Team head coach Michelle French, U-17 Women’s National Team head coach B.J. Snow and three goalkeeper coaches who have all worked extensively with the USA’s youth teams: Graeme Abel, Phil Poole and Siri Mullinix.
