Wrestling’s Stauffer Wins Cliff Keen Invite 184-Pound Title
LAS VEGAS—Arizona State wrestling’s redshirt junior Blake Stauffer won his second tournament title of the season on Saturday, going 5-0 at 184 pounds at the 33rd annual Cliff Keen Invitational at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
Stauffer, who is currently undefeated in tournament competition at 10-0, defeated North Dakota State’s Hayden Zilmer, 4-2, in tiebreaker competition, and then defeated Oregon State’s Taylor Meeks for the second time this season, this time in a 5-2 decision to win the title.
On Friday, Stauffer defeated Cal Baptist’s Jacob Waste in the opening round in a 4-0 decision, and then picked up his eighth career tech fall victory over Jack Duane from The Citadel. In the quarterfinals, Stauffer picked up an 11-7 decision over Ophir Bernstein to advance to the semifinals.
Redshirt senior Joel Smith also placed, taking seventh at 157 pounds. On Saturday, Smith was pinned by Boise State’s Steven Hernandez in 2:08, but rebounded with a win over Oregon State’s Alex Elder in a 17-9 major decision.
Also competing on Saturday was redshirt junior Josh DaSilveira, who dropped a 20-8 major decision to Indiana’s Lucas Sheridan, while redshirt junior Preston McCalmon dropped a 5-4 decision over Virginia Tech’s Sal Mastrani.
In team competition, ASU finished in 17th of 37 teams with 41 points. Minnesota finished first with 146 points.
The Sun Devils are back in action on Sunday, Dec. 21 at the Reno Tournament of Champions in Nevada.
