VB’s Gardner Named ASU’s 1st AVCA All-American In 14 Years

TEMPE, Ariz.—Arizona State volleyball’s junior outside hitter Macey Gardner was named to the AVCA All-America Third Team, the American Volleyball Coaches Association announced on Wednesday.

Gardner, a native of Gilbert, Ariz., is the first Sun Devil to earn the honor in 14 years, and just the sixth All-American in ASU’s history. This year, 15 outside hitters were named to the three AVCA All-America teams.

“It’s a remarkable recognition for Macey,” head coach Jason Watson said. “These types of recognitions come as a result of hard work, sacrifice and selflessness. Macey represents all those traits and more. We are all so proud of her and the way in which she represents our program.”

In 2014, Gardner led the Sun Devils with a career best 594 kills, the new No. 2 in the single-season list, and also tied the school record for kills in a single match with her career high of 30 on Sept. 24 at Arizona.

Along with the 30-kill match, Gardner recorded three more matches with 27 kills or more for a career total of eight matches in ASU’s top-10 single-match for kills in the rally-scoring era.

At Washington State on Nov. 21, Gardner set the school record for points in a single match with 33.0, and now has six matches in the single-game top-10 for points (29.0 or more).

With 1,677 kills in her career, Gardner will enter her senior season with 194 kills to go until she hits the school record of 1,871, set by Christine Garner (1992-95). She also is poised to become ASU’s 17thathlete with 1,000 or more digs, with a current career total of 944.

A 2014 Pac-12 All Conference team honoree, Gardner is ASU’s second three-time selection to the league honor, and was also recently named to the Pac-12 All-Academic Honorable Mention list for the second time in her career. Last week, the AVCA named Gardner to the All-Pacific South Region team, making her ASU’s first selection since 2000.

The Sun Devil volleyball team wrapped its second 20-win season in three years with a record of 20-14, appearing in the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2006. This was the third consecutive year ASU earned a bid to the tournament, and the first time ASU went three straight since going four straight from 1992 to 1995.
