California’s Cowling Selected Freshman of the Week

SAN FRANCISCO - OREGON STATE’s Jamie Weisner was named the Pac-12 Player of the Week, while CALIFORNIA’s Mikayla Cowling was tabbed the Freshman of the Week, as announced by the Conference on Monday.

Junior guard Jamie Weisner (Clarkston, Wash.) led the Beavers to three victories last week, preserving OSU’s undefeated Conference record and giving the team sole possession of first place in the Conference standings.  Weisner dropped 21 points in the Beavers’ 68-57 victory over No. 12 Arizona State, shooting 8-of-14 from the field and 3-of-4 from behind the arc, while also pulling down five rebounds. The junior started her week off by scoring 26 points on 9-of-15 shooting (6-of-9 three-pointers) as the Beavers beat Washington, 75-67, and notched a seven-point, six-rebound performance in the team’s 73-55 victory over Arizona. On the week, Weisner averaged 18.0 points and 6.3 rebounds per game and shot .625 from three-point range.

Cal freshman forward Mikayla Cowling (Benecia, Calif.) averaged 9.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game for the Bears last week, leading the team to wins over USC, 67-53, and UCLA, 72-57. The freshman led Cal on the weekend in field goal percentage at .692 (9-of-13) after going 5-of-7 at USC and 4-of-6 at UCLA. Against the Bruins Cowling had eight points and a career-high nine rebounds while also dishing out three assists. Cowling scored 11 against USC.

A player of the week has been selected every week since 1986-87, the first year the Conference sponsored women’s sports. A freshman of the week was first selected in 2012-13.

Oregon State returns home for a Saturday matchup with USC at 2:30 p.m. PT, while California hosts Washington Saturday at 2:30 p.m. PT.
