UO Crushes Nevada 7-0

01/31/15 | Men's Tennis

EUGENE, Ore. – The Ducks took care of No. 66 Nevada 7-0 Friday night at the Student Tennis Center. No. 43 Oregon is now 5-1 on the season and a perfect 4-0 at home.

How It Happened: Coming into the match, the Ducks were 4-0 when winning the doubles point, and that trend dictated the momentum of today's match yet again. Oregon grabbed control early when Daan Maasland and Daniel Sardu won at No. 2 doubles 6-1 over Nevada's Andrew Poustie and Fernando Sunago.

Kevin Farin and Jayson Amos sealed the doubles point for UO when they defeated Robert Allan and Moez Chargui 6-2 on court one to put UO ahead 1-0 in the overall match.

Maasland continued his dominant day in singles and crushed Poustie on court two 6-0, 6-3 to give Oregon a 2-0 lead. Poustie entered the match at No. 15 in the ITA Mountain Region Singles Rankings.

The Ducks put a 3-0 stranglehold on the match when Cormac Clissold edged out the Wolf Pack's Robert Margitfalvi 6-3, 6-2 on court six.

Sardu put the match to bed at No. 4 singles when he got the best of Robert Allan in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 to guarantee Oregon the win.

Amos was next to finish, and he successfully moved to a team-high 12 overall singles wins on the year when he beat Ryan Andrada of Nevada 6-2, 6-2 on court three. Simon Stevens was tested a bit more at No. 5 singles, but the freshman defeated Peter O'Donovan 6-3, 6-4 to move the overall score to 6-0.

The closest and most entertaining match of the evening came at No. 1 singles with Kevin Farin and Nevada's Moez Chargui. The two traded blows back and forth, but Farin managed to recover from one set down to defeat Chargui in the second and tiebreaker sets 4-6, 7-6 (4), 10-6.

Quotable: Head Coach Nils Schyllander
“We really tried to make an emphasis to come out with a lot of energy early, because there is definitely some uncertainty in your first time out (Nevada's first match of season), and I think we were able to use that to our advantage.”

Daan Maasland, Junior
“It (his singles match) started well, I have a lot of confidence in here, my own court every home match. Had a good start, and it just kept going on.”

What It Means: The win marks UO's second victory over an opponent ranked in the top 75 of the ITA team rankings. It also is the Ducks fourth win at home, making them a perfect 4-0 in the Student Tennis Center on the Year.

Heavyweight Matchup: Although the individual match was meaningless with the overall match already in hand, Farin and Chargui's match was the highlight of the night. With Farin ranked No. 14 in the ITA Northwest Region Singles Rankings and Chargui slotted at No. 7 in the Mountain Region Singles rankings, the two aces lasted long after the rest of the other matches. Farin earned the win tonight, but the two could easily face a rematch tomorrow afternoon on the same court.

Next Up: Oregon will rest up tonight and prepare to face Nevada again tomorrow at the Student Tennis Center at 3 p.m.
