Pac-12 announces men's swimmer and diver of the month
SAN FRANCISCO - CALIFORNIA junior Josh Prenot was voted the Pac-12 Men’s Swimmer of the Month, while ARIZONA STATE freshman David Hoffer was named the Pac-12 Men’s Diver of the Month for January 2015, the Conference announced today.
Prenot (Orcutt, Calif.) had five first-place finishes in five different events to help Cal men’s swimming and diving to dual meet wins at Arizona State and Arizona. The junior won the 100 breast (55.32) and the 200 back (1:46.59) at Arizona State on Jan. 23, then followed with victories in the 200 fly (1:47.65), the 200 breast (1:56.69) and the 400 IM (3:50.53) at Arizona on Jan. 24. Prenot, the 2013 Pac-12 Newcomer of the Year and two-time Conference champion in the 400 IM, has helped the Golden Bears win 20-straight dual meets since the 2012-13 season.
Hoffer (Littleton, Colo.) placed in the top three in all meets for the month of January, including three first-place finishes. The freshman opened the month with a second-place finish in the 1-meter against Utah with a 312.52, then improved with winning the 3-meter against BYU the next day with a 339.60. Hoffer then swept the dives versus Cal, recording a 331.80 on the 1-meter and a 393.30 on the 3-meter to win both events. In the dual against Stanford the next day, he placed second in the 3-meter (353.18) and third in the 1-meter (332.55). He wrapped up January with a win in the 3-meter preliminary round at the Air Force Invitational with a 370.55, and a second-place finish in the final round with a 353.75.
Prenot’s honor is the first of his career and marks the sixth selection all-time for the Golden Bears. Hoffer’s diving honor is the second of his career, having earned the honor for December 2014, and the 16th all-time for the Sun Devils, which leads the Conference.
Cal has dual meets against USC on Friday, Feb. 6 and Stanford on Saturday, Feb. 21 to wrap up the regular swimming season. Arizona State’s diving squad heads to the Canadian Diving Winter Nationals in the first weekend of February, beginning Friday, Feb. 6, before heading to the Pac-12 Diving Championships Feb. 26-28.
