Pac-12 announces weekly baseball honors

Feb 16, 2015

SAN FRANCISCO - ARIZONA second baseman Scott Kingery has been named Pac-12 Player of the Week and Arizona State right-handed pitcher Ryan Burr has been tabbed Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week for the first week of the regular season, the Conference office announced Monday.

Kingery led the offense for the Wildcats, who went 3-0 over the week, outscoring Eastern Michigan 29-8 over three games. The Phoenix, Ariz., native batted .538 (7-for-13) with four runs scored and five RBIs against the Eagles. Among his seven hits were a pair of triples and his second career home run, boosting his weekend slugging percentage to a healthy 1.077 clip. After hitting safely in the final seven games last season, Kingery has a 10-game overall hitting streak. An all-conference honoree as an outfielder last season, Kingery played errorless defense at second base in his first time playing the position.

Burr, a junior from Highlands Ranch, Colo., earned the win the Sun Devils’ extra-innings victory over Baseball America No. 8-ranked Oklahoma State on Friday night and registered the save in the series-clinching win on Saturday. In the Friday night game, Burr took over in the ninth inning of a tie game and struck out five of the six batters he faced in the final two frames of the game. On Saturday he pitched his way out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth and threw a perfect ninth inning to clinch the series. On the weekend, Burr threw 3.1 scoreless innings while striking out seven and conceding just one hit. The save was Burr’s 25th, which tied ASU pitcher Doug Nurenberg’s nearly 48-year-old record set in 1967, the longest standing individual career record in Sun Devil baseball history.
