Arizona State’s Amukamara Named Player of the Week

Stanford’s McPhee Selected Freshman of the Week

SAN FRANCISCO - ARIZONA STATE’s Promise Amukamara was named the Pac-12 Player of the Week, while STANFORD’s Brittany McPhee was tabbed the Freshman of the Week, as announced by the Conference on Monday.

Senior guard Promise Amukamara (Glendale, Ariz.) averaged 15.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.5 steals per game while connecting on 61 percent of her field goal attempts (14-for-23) in ASU’s wins at UCLA, 68-56 and at USC, 76-73 (2OT). Nine of her 11 points in the game against UCLA came in the second half, which helped the Sun Devils overcome a seven-point halftime deficit. Against USC, Amukamara logged 48 of 50 possible minutes (a career high) and scored a game-high 20 points to go along with seven rebounds. Sixteen of her 20 points came in the second half including eight of ASU’s 12 points in the two overtime periods (4-of-4 FGs). Combining the second halves of both games and the two overtimes in the USC game, Amukamara played 43 of a possible 50 minutes and scored 27 points while knocking down 65 percent of her field goal attempts (11-for-17).

Stanford Freshman Brittany McPhee (Normandy Park, Wash.) was electric off the bench for the Cardinal, averaging 16.5 points and 6.0 rebounds while shooting .591 from the field. Called on to add energy and aggressiveness when Stanford faced a double-digit deficit at Cal on Wednesday, McPhee provided that and more, scoring nine and grabbing six rebounds in her most floor time since December, sparking her team to victory 59-47. In Stanford’s loss to Cal on Sunday, McPhee scored a career-high 24 points to lead all scorers in a personal-best 36 minutes, becoming the sixth Stanford player to score 20-plus points this season and the eighth different Cardinal to lead her team in scoring.

A player of the week has been selected every week since 1986-87, the first year the Conference sponsored women’s sports. A freshman of the week was first selected in 2012-13.

Arizona State will play its last two games at home, next tipping off on Friday, Feb. 22 at 6:30 p.m. MT against Utah, while Stanford will travel for a matchup with Oregon State on Thursday, Feb. 26 at 6 p.m. PT.
