PHOENIX – Seventeenth-ranked Sun Devil Baseball capped off its second day of the Phoenix Muni Classic with a 15-run, 17-hit offensive outburst in a 15-5 win against Purdue on Friday night at Phoenix Municipal Stadium. Arizona State split its doubleheader after dropping the first game, 7-4, to CSU Bakersfield.

The Sun Devils (6-4) scored their most runs since April 20, 2013, in the Friday night win over the Boilermakers.

GAME TWO – ASU 15, Purdue 5

The Sun Devils and Purdue traded runs in the second and third innings before the Devils broke it open with a nine-run fifth inning to defeat the Boilermakers, 15-5, in game two of ASU's doubleheader.

Designated hitter RJ Ybarra went a career best 4-for-4 at the plate with a pair of RBI and four runs scored to pace the Sun Devils at the plate. Freshman infielder Andrew Snow and catcher Zach Cerbo also put together career nights. Snow knocked in a pair of RBI and made his first career start at second base, and Cerbo went 2-for-3 with three RBI and a pair of runs scored.

Right-handed reliever Eder Erives (1-0) replaced starting left-hander Brett Lilek with two outs in the top of the third and Erives pitched 3 1/3 shutout innings to register his first win of the season. Erives struck out four and scattered three hits.

The Boilermakers (4-6) took an early 3-0 lead in the second inning, but ASU matched with its own three-run frame in the bottom of the inning. Purdue again took the lead in the top of the third behind a pair of runs, but the Devils countered with two in the bottom half of the inning to knot the game at five runs apiece.

ASU sent 13 batters to the plate in its nine-run fifth inning, which was highlighted by a two-run single from Cerbo and a two-run double from third baseman Dalton DiNatale.

A trio of freshmen pitchers closed out the final three innings, including a pair who made their first career appearances in the eighth and ninth innings, respectively. Left-hander Eli Lingos struck out one in the seventh, left-hander Andrew Shaps took over in the eighth inning and struck out three in a scoreless frame, and right-hander Grant Schneider struck out a pair in the ninth.

GAME ONE – CSU Bakersfield 7, ASU 4

CSU Bakersfield scored seven runs in the final four innings to defeat the Sun Devils, 7-4, in game one of ASU's doubleheader.

ASU scattered three runs over the first four innings to take a 3-0 lead, but the Roadrunners answered with three runs in the top of the sixth to pull even. CSUB added a run in the seventh to briefly take a 4-3 advantage before the Devils countered with one of their own in the eighth.

The Roadrunners broke the 4-4 tie with three runs in the top of the ninth off a trio of singles, a wild pitch and a fielding error. ASU left fielder Jake Peevyhouse walked to lead off the bottom of the frame and shortstop Colby Woodmansee followed with a single to bring the tying run to the plate with no outs, but designated hitter RJ Ybarra flew out to right-center field and infielder Joey Bielek hit into a double play to end the game.

Starting right-hander Darin Gillies retired 10 consecutive batters between the second and fifth innings before he conceded a leadoff single and a two-run homer in the top of the sixth. He struck out a season-high seven and did not issue a walk in a five-inning no-decision.

Peevyhouse scored the first run of the game in the opening inning after he singled, advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches and came home via a fielding error on a grounder by Ybarra. Third baseman Dalton DiNatale hit his second solo home run in as many games to give the Devils a two-run lead through the first two innings of play. His leadoff single in the fourth led to ASU's third run two batters later.

The Roadrunners used a two-run homer by center fielder Jordie Hein and a sacrifice fly from shortstop Mylz Jones to notch three runs in the sixth. Jones added a RBI single in the seventh to give CSUB its first lead of the game, 4-3.

Freshman Ryan Lillard pinch hit in the bottom of the eighth inning and tied the game with his first career RBI on a double down the left-field line.

Devils right-handed reliever Ryan Hingst (0-1) took his first career loss after he was responsible for two runs, including one earned, in the ninth. CSUB starting pitcher reliever Max Carter (1-0) allowed just one run on six hits in three innings to earn the win.
